If he retires a Leafs then kiss the chances of the Leafs winning a cup within the next decade goodbye.

Do people forget hockey players waive their NMCs all the time if the fit and team is right? Carolina is a stanley cup contender.

Why would Marner whose dream was to play for Toronto want to waive to leave Toronto

Carolina and Toronto are in the same category SCC

Carolina 11-8
Toronto 10-5-3

Makes 0 sense for either side to help one another

Leafs need defense. Carolina needs more scoring and elite talent. This trade helps both.

I think Anaheim could get a Copp return on Rico and then at least a 3rd plus a decent prospect for Bush IF Pat decides to trade him at the deadline

I’d probably decline because we get more trading them separately

I don't understand how you can guarantee Marner will never switch teams. He's not even in his 30's yet, or even that close. He's got a lot of years left in the league. He could easily end up moving on at some point, especially if Toronto actually wants to get rid of him

Marner is making almost $11 MIL now which is basically what 2 ex-Leafs make combined in Hyman and McCann who are both on 40 goal paces again this season and both thought they were going to be Leafs. Hyman wanted to stay here badly on an 8 x $4.5-$5 MIL contract and retire a Leaf.

When Jones and other dmen were taking $9.5 MIL contracts, Rielly wanted to stay a Leaf and took $7.5 MIL x 8 years leaving up to $16 MIL on the table. THAT is wanting to play for the Leafs. NOT the contract Marner fought for.

If Marner leaves as a UFA we get all the cap space that he is going to fight for again to play for the Leafs because he wants to be here so badly. I suspect he is going to want $13 MIL + for 4-5 years to get one last payday before he retires. You can never get enough money for yourself in a TEAM based salary cap system if you are a Leaf star.

Look at Tampa Bay stars...and you can't say they took less because of taxes because playing around the league they still have almost 40% in income tax. Marner and Matthews didn't want to win a Cup, they want to only maximize their earnings while they are still able to play in the NHL.

Because he’s a hometown boy he never leaves it’s really quite simple I’m surprised you didn’t realize it lol

...then the Leafs won't win the Cup until after he retires. He's a great player but makes too much of the salary cap for the Leafs to add others. Matthews is a Franchise player and he also cripples the finances to build a contender in Toronto. You need at least 9 forwards and 4 dmen with a hot goalie to win. Leafs have 6, maybe 7, forwards, 1 dman and a half decent rookie backup learning. Somethings got to give. The Leafs current team chemistry can't survive 4 playoff series that could go 7 games each. The lack of depth puts too much weight on the stars and they wear out.

It all started when Dubas signed Tavares to an astronimical contract before the young players were ready.
