Description
Franson brought in as 7/8D.

At this point, there's no reason for the caps to do this. It's just something I wanted to mess around with after seeing the idea thrown around here.

This is such a silly trade!! Why would the leafs trade a PROVEN prospect with high potential for Caps junk.

Junk? A top pairing defenseman, blossoming top 6 winger, future starting goalie, and a defenseman with top 4 potential is junk?

Burakovsky and Nylander, in last year's playoffs were about equally productive. Nylander put up a point per 28 minutes. Burakovsky put up a point per 31. The difference is that Nylander was playing with Auston Matthews, whereas Burakovsky was skating with Lars Eller. So, even though Burakovsky is more expensive this year, he's a better player right now, and he's signed through next year, when Nylander might demand 4M or more. Caps shouldn't trade Burakovsky for Nylander unless it's for cap space to extend Carlson right away. Trading away Carlson kind of negates their need for cap space. also, Franson is pencilled onto every club on here, so he might end up costing more than that.

oh my.... 1st of Carlson is not top 2 and never has been an efficient top pairing Dman either.
Additionally, Carlson is age 27. Thus, the prospect of further development is limited and to make things worse is a UFA next season, which is problematic at the least.

Next, Burakovsky has never scored more then 17 goals while playing high impact minutes. To say the least he is very inconsistent and would not be on Toronto's top line! Plus, his contract is up soon! That leaves 2 options: Payday or lose him!

Also. Top 4 potential is a BIG stretch for Siegenthaler. The dude has never even played in the NHL and can't even make the top pairing while playing for the Bears (AHL). If anything he's maybe a top 6, that is if he makes it to the NHL. BYW, he's turning 21 soon and still not played in the NHL. Some prospect!

Lastly, you are offering Grubauer. I'm sorry but he will not be replacing Anderson. End of. Thus, his role is limited. It is also likely that he is potentially starter material for a club in need and will be gone by next season. Cause he too is UFA.

I'm noticing a pattern, this trade has a whole bunch of UFA's

In total. This trade amounts to a whole bunch of SOON to be UFA's! Coupled with inconsistent players with little potential.

In the end the leafs are by no means getting better by this trade. If anything, one could argue they are taking on a bunch of soon to be UFA's, and losing a rising star in Nylander for nothing.

For the caps this is a GREAT trade. But for Toronto, well, not so much.

Carlson is easily top pairing. Any team would kill to have him. Just a shame he was put with Alzner or Orpik most his career. Watch out for him this year now he'll be away from them.

Bura played impactful minutes? He was in bottom 6 the whole year. He's easily a top 6 talent. Will have a break out season this year now he's in top 6. 25+ goals a real possibility. He had a better points per 60 minutes than guys like Drouin, Couture, Stone, Coyle, Monahan, Toews, Voracek etc.

You know how many 21yo prospects haven't played in the NHL? A f load, especially defensemen. Most don't hit the NHL until 23 or 24. Not saying he will be top 4, he has the skill set but still has to prove it.

I'd agree it wouldn't make sense for TOR to take Grubauer when they have Andersen, but wouldn't surprise me if Grubauer ends up being better.

I agree with you that this trade wouldn't make sense for TOR but I think you are really undervaluing what the Caps are offering.

I guess we'll agree to disagree haha.

I've watched Carlson a lot and see why he NEVER plays top 2. He's often a defensive liability. He has strong offensive upside but not as an efficient defender to play top 2.

Also, i don't disagree with you on how 21yo players still have a great chance at developing. In this case i'm challenging one particular player and using empirical evidence (the ability not to play top 2 in minors, NO NHL experience, and AHL struggles) that suggests he will, at most, be a top 6 and does NOT have the skill and has proven that!

Lastly you may be correct in my undervaluing of the Caps. However, i feel there is a basis for it, with inconsistency, low potential, UFA/RFA status and OVERVALUING being the reason.

Pretty sure Cody Franson is worthy of the second defensive line, especially with this team.

to be clear

1) Carlson would be Toronto's best d man by a sizable margin
2) burk hasnt played with anyone with matthews talent this year hell be with backstrom or kuzy (both better than matthews) well see his point/goals go way up since he wont be w lars eller
3) grub could def challenge anderson for a top spot you should watch him play before u just blindly make statements
4) Siegenthaler is a top 50 prospect and hell be a top 4 d man in the nhl very soon him and hobbs were lights out in rookie camp

Siegenthaler hasn´t had struggles in AHL. He has played in Europe the whole season before coming to play with Hershey when the NLA season ended. That´s why he has only played a few games per season in AHL. You can´t judge a 21-year old defender when you just have seen his stats.

Wow. This thread is insane. The deal first off is way lopsided in Washington's favour. Yes, Carlson would likely be our best defenseman. But you know who is right now? The guy you sent back in the deal. Gardiner. Add that Carlson's deal is expiring and you'd be hard pressed to sell Carlson for Gardiner 1 for 1 to me. You listed in your description Carlson as a top 4 on an expiring deal, and Gardiner as a top 4 with 2 years. Why would the Leafs lose a year for no reason? That was even your evaluation.

Next, you are crazy if you think Bura is close to Nylander. You seriously used limited PLAYOFF STATISTICS to determine who is the better player?!? Complete joke. Nylander blows him out of the water. Also, back to your description, Nylander is listed as a bonafide young top winger (will play center in the future though, which adds value), while Bura is a young top 6 winger. Again, your words, not mine.

Grub has value, but is redundant on the Leafs roster.

Garbage all around.

Didn't even mention that you said both Backstrom and Kuz are better than Matthews. Man.
