Free agency strategy and potential targets

Description
I take the position that Montreal should likely acknowledge that one more year of drafting early is good for the rebuilding process before they make any big moves, especially since they already have 2 first round picks next year and if they trade Matheson at the trade deadline they could get another one.

I think they need one more right handed defence man prospect and perhaps one more top 6 prospect (not sure about Dach’s health and Newhook’s offence moving forward)
Therefore, I think they could consider free agents that fit long term (27 or younger) or “higher- end” free agents that are willing to accept short term deals that could be traded for futures if the team sees fit this year.

If I were Hughes I would look at:
Jake DeBrusk (young enough for long term fit on second line)
Jonathan Marchessault (short term trade able contract if he is willing to do so — allowing Montreal to retain on him if he gets traded)
Sean Monahan (same situation as Marchessault).

Open to other suggestions.

I realize that in my approach Montreal may not end up getting anyone in free agency this year and I am OK with that.

Leafs weren’t trading for Savard at this past TDL, they definitely aren’t in off season - they’ll address their needs via FA.
At least you’ve walked back from the preposterous 1st round pick for Savard that many of your brain dead fellow Habs fans were pushing

And what does the all-knowing, completely unbiased Toronto fan base expect they will get for Marner, out of curiosity?

the best part about this site going away is that I wont have to see habs fans pretending that anyone wants savard and his terrible contract, especially the leafs

Not all knowing, but if you can explain to me why Leafs would trade picks and more importantly occupy cap space for a not that good & old defender when they can target better, younger players via FA - I’m all ears.
I predicted (and stand by ) that Marner won’t be moved. He was, and is, not the problem with lack of Leafs playoff success.
Would be madness to move a top 25 player in his prime.

Teams trade for veteran stay-at-home D-men all the time. Toronto just traded for the rights to Tanev (not a signed Tanev), who is a year older than Savard and does not have a Cup on his resume.

Do you think running back the Core 4 is how Toronto is going to succeed?

Unfortunately, I think our defensive core isn’t good enough. Getting Hensler would solve it tho

We're good
Hughes does better with his picks then Bergavin did
Captain Konyushkov the 21 year old KHL RD MTL has who's one of the younger players on his team.
He wasnt given that role due to lack of options, he got it because he earned their respect and the Fans Love Captain Kony
Right now he's Mentoring 10th OA pick Anton Silayev

That's just 1 of the many piece MTL fans often overlook until they're here like Oliver Kapanen or Florian Xhekaj , Luke Tuch or Josh Roy even.
The were all seen as unlike to play in MTL but as time progresses they're all Pro and either play for MTL or will in the next 2 years most likely

All we truly need today?
A bit of time and to move out Matheson for a maximum profit.
Draft Assets in 2026 or 2027 would be ideal so we can buy depth when we're competing for a Cup

Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky
Newhook-Demidov-Dach
Roy-Kapanen-Hage
Tuch-F.Xhekaj-Beck
Mesar

Guhle-Barron(only NHL ready guy so by proxy for 1-2 years then likely traded)
Hutson-Reinbacher
Xhekaj-Mailloux
Struble-Engstrom
Harris -Konyushkov
Kostenko (worth mentioning he's had KHL and their version of AHL for parts of 5 season by age 21, He was big really quick and didnt just stay in junior like most would)

My Point is the only player i truly think fits and we'd pay is Monahan as we know his value to our team
I'd love it if we targeted him too for sure

I think one more mediocre year and then adding a prospect like Hagens, Martone, Spence, Hensler, Or Frondell is Ok.

Then be aggressive in free agency after next season (which will line up with Demidov coming to North America)
