I was curious about what an overpay would look like from a cap perspective.

If Boston is offering say 7 x $6.25 for Lindholm, which seems around right, then for CLB to get him it’s either 7 x $7.25 or maybe the same amount as Boston over two less years.

Anyways, that was the thought experiment. Waddell not fired for overpaying Lindholm for sure. Might be fired for the Laine for nothing trade

He's not moving without retention, every expert agrees on this. Too much unknown. Unless a team like Seattle, Utah, chi or sj want him, he's gonna need retention anywhere else

Cbj are going to retain, it’s just how much. My hunch is about 2.5.
Now lindholm will probably be signed for 7x7 or 7.75 x 7.

Personally i wouldn’t sign that player for that term or money but I have a feeling if we move laine on draft day, we are going to target him hard in FA. my hunch is we end up with chandler Stephenson.

He won’t ***need*** retention if you take back a marginal asset / cap liability. Ideally for one year not two.

Preferable to retain for two years than take back a liability that might be signed beyond that, like Josh Anderson or Nichushkin or Josh Norris.

So true. Josh Norris is tricky. A great player. But these shoulder injuries are daunting. Josh Anderson I could see being a solid 141. Cap savings. Better trade deadline asset albeit an additional year out. Probably a better vet in the room.
