Description
Would do A LOT to get McGroarty. Exactly the kind of guy I'd love the wings to add. Beneficial as well with him at Michigan, especially if he still goes back even after a trade.

Despite my affinity for him, not willing to trade one of our top prospects for him. I view it as we can draft MBN alternatively who at best is similar to Rutger. But more unknown/further away.

The trade:
Jets ideally get help now while also adding assets.
Wings don't have much to give that can help the Jets now. I include Holl as a neutral player with 1m retained. Better than a buyout for the wings, with fewer years of money. And fills a need for the Jets as a defensive RHD at a lowish cost on short term.
15th overall is the key asset of the trade. Not as valuable as Rutger alone, but should be a good enough prospect available there for the Jets to somewhat replace Rutger.
Berggren and James are the sweetener.
While Burgers is not the perfect guy for the Jets as a smallish winger, he can fill into a spot potentially left by Ehlers departure. Hopefully they could give him a chance on the second line.
James is an ok prospect, drafted second round and playing at UND, which should be enticing for Winnipeg being close by.

I wouldn't give up any more than this value wise. My immediate feeling was the Wings aren't a good trade partner for the Jets as I'm not willing to part with Danielson, ASP, Kasper, Ed; but after seeing other offers here on CF, I guess popular opinion doesn't demand more than this trade.

Other considerations on this roster:
1. Acquiring a decent goalie or signing a third
2. Danielson, Kasper, Mazur will they make the roster
3. Rutger signing or going back to Michigan
4. Trade Fabbri/Maata?
5. Sign Marchy, Stamkos, Kane, etc if we free some cap room

For me, a lot of those decisions could depend on what Rutger would do.

There is no reason to sell the farm to get him. If MBN is sitting there at 15, I prefer him straight up to McGroarty. I think he is more likely to go for a pick in the 20s plus a prospect once comparable players can’t be taken. He went 14OA and has improved at a trajectory you would expect for a player of his draft status and age progressing.

Has anyone thought about Marco Kasper (taken ninth overall in the same draft as McGroarty) and Detroit's 2025 second? This seems pretty comparable to the Cutter Gauthier return, and I don't think that the Jets are looking for a defenseman as a key element in any McGroarty deal -- they've got 4 LhDs under contract for next season plus Heinola, and Pionk plus two good prospects on the right. Drysdale > Kasper (even though Kasper has a full AHL season under his belt) but Gauthier > McGroarty. Then you still get to draft Brandsegg-Nygard or Helenius at #15.

It's a good thought and I do agree Rutger has more value than Kasper. I just don't see Stevie keen on trading away Kasper, and I personally wouldn't be too high on it either. Seems like more of a lateral move for the wings = less incentive, even if it is the deal that would make more sense for the Jets. From my personal view, I am miles higher on Kasper than I was a year ago, and I am of the belief that Wings staff feel similarly. He is trending well.

How on earth does mcGroaty have more value than Kasper. The NCAA and the AHL are not comparable leagues. Kasper put up more than half a point a game in the second best league in the world as a true 19 year old after breaking his kneecap and missing all of trading camp. While playing 2nd line center on a playoff team. McGroarty played wing on a stacked college team and put up acceptable numbers for a d+2. Detroit doesn't add; that's silly.

That would be a no from me. Wouldn’t trade Kasper for him one for one.

Halfway through this season Pronman ranked McGroarty at 76 and Kasper at 77 for his top players under 23 segment, so chill. (I looked this up to see if I was off base). Point being, they are close. I was being nice in giving the nod to Rutger, but said I wouldn't trade Kasper for him, a lot for the reasons you have listed.

Not in this draft and McGroarty is way closer to NHL ready than anybody we’d pick in that range.

So you'd rather have McGroarty than possibly Beckett Sennecke, Konsta Helenius, Cole Eiserman, Berkly Catton, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Michael Hage or someone else?

That's without taking into account what else it would cost. I would rather have Johnny Burgers and whichever stud we take a shot at above.

Do you have something against McGroarty? Sennecke, Catton and likely Helenius are gone. Eiserman isn't even in the conversation for being half as a good as Rutger. Hage and MBN might be nice prospects but they're nothing more. Just more unproven and further away than Rutger is.

If it's just 15 OA, so we can keep Burgers, you don't do it?
