Would do A LOT to get McGroarty. Exactly the kind of guy I'd love the wings to add. Beneficial as well with him at Michigan, especially if he still goes back even after a trade.
Despite my affinity for him, not willing to trade one of our top prospects for him. I view it as we can draft MBN alternatively who at best is similar to Rutger. But more unknown/further away.
The trade:
Jets ideally get help now while also adding assets.
Wings don't have much to give that can help the Jets now. I include Holl as a neutral player with 1m retained. Better than a buyout for the wings, with fewer years of money. And fills a need for the Jets as a defensive RHD at a lowish cost on short term.
15th overall is the key asset of the trade. Not as valuable as Rutger alone, but should be a good enough prospect available there for the Jets to somewhat replace Rutger.
Berggren and James are the sweetener.
While Burgers is not the perfect guy for the Jets as a smallish winger, he can fill into a spot potentially left by Ehlers departure. Hopefully they could give him a chance on the second line.
James is an ok prospect, drafted second round and playing at UND, which should be enticing for Winnipeg being close by.
I wouldn't give up any more than this value wise. My immediate feeling was the Wings aren't a good trade partner for the Jets as I'm not willing to part with Danielson, ASP, Kasper, Ed; but after seeing other offers here on CF, I guess popular opinion doesn't demand more than this trade.
Other considerations on this roster:
1. Acquiring a decent goalie or signing a third
2. Danielson, Kasper, Mazur will they make the roster
3. Rutger signing or going back to Michigan
4. Trade Fabbri/Maata?
5. Sign Marchy, Stamkos, Kane, etc if we free some cap room
For me, a lot of those decisions could depend on what Rutger would do.
A mid first and a bunch of nothing isn't getting McGroarty.
Thanks for your feedback jam. I've seen a lot of much worse offers on here, and not many better that their fanbase were in favour of. But I would have preferred if you just read that in my description - stating that the wings aren't great trade partners here for the jets, yet I haven't seen many good options yet on this site.
If 2 2nd round picks and a signed player (I know Winnipeg's struggle here) is nothing to you, then I have questions.

Yeah, but reading your rationalization for a lowball offer doesn't change what it is.
They likely aren't good trade partners, but the only thing of interest here is the first.
Would you want to trade one of your best prospects for a similar package?

Nope I wouldn't. None of the Wings prospects are rumoured to not sign with them though.
I should note that I am a close supporter of the Jets and not trying to screw them here.
I agree that Rutger is worth a fair amount, but I also think this is a better return than Cutter got. Whether it is a low-ball offer or not is up to interpretation, and my interpretation from other offers tells me that it is in line. I mocked 10OA and Holtz for Rutger from the Devils (I really don't rate Holtz). Was told that was a big overpay. This package at least equals 10 OA imo

With two years to work it out, the Jets don't need to take a lowball offer now, they have time.
It hasn't seemed to hurt the Jets before, so I'm not concerned.
Agreed. But this is not a PLD or Trouba situation. Big difference. They had rental value at the least before becoming a UFA. Plus the desire for guaranteed money. Rutger has neither.

True. But I think McGroarty has really upped his stock the last little while and will be fairly sought after.
Apparently some writers are thinking a deal could be made at the draft with Winnipeg looking to get back on the 1st round.
As long as the Jets can get something useful, it should be fine.

I think he's extremely sought after. Bloody shame if the Jets have to trade him.
For the Jets sake I hope they get a top 10 pick then. Realistically I only see NJD at 10 or maybe Buffalo at 11 as a fit. After that, I would like the fit on the Wings. Maybe some package surrounding Necas could work.

Yes it is unfortunate. I'm really surprised the owners haven't closed that NCAA loophole. These young players are getting way too much control on where they go without ever having played.
That aside, I'd be extremely happy if Winnipeg could get in the top 10 for Rutger. I don't think it will happen, but maybe one of the loose cannons like Philly, Buffalo or NJ like you said, get antsy.
Honestly if I can't get him for Gibson plus a second I probably don't try right now. Gibson looks like he's going to be a good player and he fills a need in Winnipeg. Too many teams can make better offers and there is no rush on him. Would really really like him though.

There is no reason to sell the farm to get him. If MBN is sitting there at 15, I prefer him straight up to McGroarty. I think he is more likely to go for a pick in the 20s plus a prospect once comparable players can’t be taken. He went 14OA and has improved at a trajectory you would expect for a player of his draft status and age progressing.
