Description
Philipp Grubauer has had his moments in Kraken colors, most notably in the 2023 postseason, but on the whole has struggled in Seattle and has been usurped by Joey Daccord as the number one netminder. A change of scenery might do him some good. In this post I've tried to find some players in a similar position who might be good candidates for a bad contract swap. I targeted players whose contracts are roughly as underwater as Grubauer's is and extend for the same length of time (three years). Driedger has played well in the AHL this year and might be a good candidate to back up Daccord on a cheaper deal, especially considering his AHL coach Bylsma is now the Kraken's head coach.

As always, constructive feedback is welcome! Cheers and Go Kraken!

Transactions
1.
SEA
  1. Skinner, Jeff
Détails additionnels:
Skinner, while overpaid, provides a goalscoring threat the Kraken could use. If they're going to have a bad contract eating up cap, I'd rather those dollars be spent bolstering the forward group than in net.
BUF
  1. Grubauer, Philipp
Détails additionnels:
Idea here is the Sabres get a veteran goalie, albeit an overpaid one, to provide support for their young guys in UPL and Levi while saving $3.1M in cap which can be used to further bolster the defense.
2.
SEA
  1. Copp, Andrew
Détails additionnels:
Another scenario where if Seattle has a bad contract on their books, it's probably better off being in the forward group as opposed to in net given their roster construction. Copp could provide center depth and cover as Wright adjusts to a full-time NHL role next year.
DET
  1. Grubauer, Philipp
Détails additionnels:
Copp hasn't really worked out with the Wings to this point, and perhaps a change of scenery could be in order. They aren't hurting in young forwards that could potentially step up into NHL roles. Grubauer could be another option for the Wings in net.
3.
CBJ
  1. Grubauer, Philipp (500 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Salary retention makes this a cap neutral swap for both teams. Both goalies have struggled in recent years, and a fresh start could be mutually beneficial.
4.
SEA
  1. Anderson, Josh
Détails additionnels:
Anderson hasn't really lived up to his reputation as a goalscoring power forward in recent years, but if he can return to form somewhat he could be serviceable as a physical source of goalscoring in a depth role for the Kraken.
MTL
  1. Grubauer, Philipp
Détails additionnels:
Montreal already has a set tandem of Montembault and Primeau, so this might not be a fit. But considering both have relatively small track records of success, having Grubauer as veteran insurance might not hurt.

I take it you don't know much about the Red Wings. We aren't trading Copp. We already have an equivalent goalie in Husso who is cheaper and less years.

Can't see the first two happening, I think both teams are relatively happy with Skinner/Copp even if theyre overpaid.

The other two feel more realistic, Merzlinkins deal for sure.

Montreal should pass. Anderson is a bit cheaper with the same amount of term, and we have Monty and primeau…..which is not the best goalie tandem but it’s better to just have the young guys play rather than have grubauer imo

Columbus says why the flip not. Gruby has to be coming in expecting a 50/50 net with Terry though.

I say no for Columbus. Grubauer has a way worse 5v5 GSAx number and a worse contract in case of a buyout.

With the retainment the cap is a wash and I'm just done with Elvis. The team plays like **** infront of him. Grubby as a 50/50 with Terry is better than anything with elvis.

I edited my previous post to make clear that I was speaking in case of a buyout.

I don't think they should move out Merzlikins by locking themselves into another long and bad deal. If they can trade him with retention for nothing or more, they should do it, in my opinion.

As a Sabers fan I don't hate this trade, but I don't think it will happen. I doubt Skinner would wave for the Kraken and the Sabers are getting a long contract. What will most likely happen is they will keep Skinner and buy him out next year and use the money to resign the RFAs on the team.
