Please stop. Not going to happen and certainly wouldn’t without Swayman, Poitras in the package.

Ullmark won’t waive and you are not getting Drai without Swayman involved.

The entire basis of the hypothetical is that Leon is rumored to want to play in BOS so it can be safely presumed that any trade to BOS would include an extension. If we're not building off that assumption then there are likely plenty of other offers that'd beat this one handily.

Draisaitl isn’t a rental. Anyone that acquires him will require an extension because of the assets that Edmonton is going to require to trade one of the best players in the league.

We aren’t getting him for Ullmark and the collection of third liners plus picks.

In reality, Edmonton isn’t trading him unless he explicitly tells them he isn’t coming back because he doesn’t want to play with McDavid.

and we have SO much evidence that an extension doesn't impact the trade value tremendously.

That's what every fan of a selling team says on here. "extension in place so we'll get their top two prospects!" never happens. All the hanifin to boston mocks. Lohrei, Poitras, and a first....but extension in place though. Nope. not a thing.

But sometime they do work out the extension quick enough that you know they talked about it prior. Does it impact the value? Meh, not much.
Mark Stone? signed on the flight over. 2nd round pick and a prospect for one of the best players in the league.
Lindholm got his extension within 24 hours i believe. that probably bumped a pick going to anaheim from a 3rd to a 2nd.

One year left is one year left. Draisaitl is a premier player, so he'll be at the very top of range of return for expiring contracts, but it isn't going to be bonkers. I would look at what Erik Karlsson got. It should be similar. No high end roster players. Probably not the teams best prospect, and a whole bunch of futures.

still a rental. see above. there's an ocean of room between what you proposed, and ullmark and third liners. don't be intentionally stupid.

I don’t see many that don’t include Swayman and Poitras that would be accepted, but enlighten me on what you are thinking.

If Draisatl is available, my guess is a lot of teams are calling.

Ullmark is an elite goalie and Frederic/Geekie are both middle six players who can play C and wing and have great cap hits. Plus two first round picks that the Oilers could flip for more talent. Ullmark probably would not waive and perhaps this is not the best offer the Oilers would get, but Edmonton's team would look pretty balanced after this trade and would have two first round picks they could flip for more talent.

Third liners are important and Geekie/Frederic are two of the better ones out there in terms of salary per production for this year. Aren’t both unrestricted next year? I know Frederic is. Geekie might be an RFA.

I love Ullmark and the players you mentioned, but Leon Draisaitl is as good as Pasta. I wouldn’t even remotely consider that package for Pasta.

Gonna have to disagree, though you make a solid case about the returns for "extension in-place" not impacting value as much as people think.

That being said, the scenarios you've listed are either not good comparables (Lindholm and Hanifin) or feature extraneous factors that negatively impacted the return (Eichel's neck; Karlsson's contract, age, and injuries; Stone being mismanaged and clearly deeply undervalued). None of those are true for Draisaitl as he represents a class of player that simply doesn't get traded. Consistent 100+ pt C, elite FOs, best playoff scorer of the modern era: this wouldn't be a kind of trade that has happened in the modern era before. As with all the other times a situation came close, the team with the elite player chose to keep the player to pursue a playoff run & hope they can re-sign him (Tavares seems like the closest comparable of the modern era). And why would this be? Because the offers were lacking. So when people say "if you want X you're gonna need to give Y & Z+", they're not wrong when X is a player of Drai's calibre. There's a higher than normal threshold of value in the return that needs to be overcome.

You could certainly flip this around and say "if BOS knows Draisaitl wants to play here, why would we pay that extra rate" which would be a fair pushback if you're that certain of the rumors. However, that just ends up being further evidence for why such a trade wouldn't happen.

90 percent of free agents, extensions or the possibility of extensions don’t matter because you assume they are going to sign for market value.

Franchise players are treated differently. Boston wouldn’t have traded David Pastrnak or Charlie McAvoy for a rental rate. They certainly wouldn’t take one for Jeremy Swayman now. Why would Edmonton? Also, why does he want to leave a team in the final four exactly?

well, i'm not trying to compare most of those guys to draisaitl, but what i am trying to compare is what a logical rental return would be vs a return for the extension in place - it isn't much. Could be more for draisaitl, but it's never going to be multiple firsts, the teams best prospects, roster players etc. that's just not a real world concept. They didn't break the mold with Draisaitl. He's a great player, but he isn't generational. He isn't McDavid.

So, I think a very good comp is Erik Karlsson. He was widely viewed as the best defenseman in the league. he had one year left on his contract. he had some injuries, but he had bounced back well. significant playoff success (he had a pretty phenomenal run to the conference final shortly before the trade). I believe he was younger at the time of the trade than Draisaitl is now. I think work off that. Maybe its a smidge more, but keep in mind when that trade happened, most of the hockey world (fans at least) were saying, "that's it? Ottawa didn't get anything!" Lucky for them San Jose tanked and one of those picks was 3rd overall.

Ok buddy. Ok bud. Cap is up to 87.7 next year. Whether it's 9.3m (total of contracts here not counting Merkulov assuming he's in AHL next year) or 11.25m of cap going to Edmonton, they're still under that 87.7

If Brendan Carlo isn't in the deal it's not happening (that's with the assumption MacAvoy is untouchable). Getting a RD to pair with Nurse is the Oilers biggest hole even when factoring in losing Draisaitl.

Just making a general statement that the argument of “rental” doesn’t apply to players who would make over $10m on the open market. Teams won’t want to trade them without a high return and teams won’t want to give up a high return without an extension.

This doesn’t apply to Noah Hanifin or Linus Ullmark or Jake Guentzel, but it did to David Pastrnak when he was a free agent.

Playing with McDavid on a team that is in the final four should be appealing

when was pastrnak ever a free agent?

why should that matter to draisaitl? this is their 9th season together. they haven't won. this is their second time out of the second round so its not like they're some juggernaut squad. the market stinks for taxes, and in terms of NHL cities to live in, not the best.

again, we have a pretty good comp here and its Karlsson - traded with a year left on his deal, viewed at the top of his position, similar age (Karlsson was younger). why does draisaitl reinvent the wheel here.

This is the equivalent of the people that tried to suggest Boston would trade Pasta last year when he signed a contract in the later part of the season or Nylander this year.

That’s the likely scenario with Draisaitl.
