Interesting take, since Necas wants one of two things. Top line and PP time, which he won't get in Toronto... or... to be played as a center! Shocking how many people forget he is a natural centerman. With Tavares falling off the face of the earth, Necas is a player that can fill that role for the long-term. Use Bertuzzi's cap to pay for Necas, and you have everything you need to be better!

I guess - in your world - a lot of nonsensical things ( such as Knies + for Necas) make sense 🤔. Don’t see a fit here and I don’t see Leafs & Canes as likely trading partners.

If Carolina didn't trust Necas to play C, then Toronto probably isn't either any time soon. Tavares would still very much be the 2C.

I don't think Toronto has the spare assets to acquire Necas in a fair deal. I don't think they will spend their 1sts on him. They also don't really have any close picks so the best would be something like Robertson + Liljegren + a distant mid pick but I doubt Carolina would accept. If Necas were to be dealt for pennies on the dollars, it won't be to another contender. Only way I see Necas end up a Leafs is if the Hurricanes trade for Marner.

I could see MTL being interested since they seem to be collecting guys like him who were drafted as Cs but never really were able to secure a 2C role.

A few things
Necas is a great player. Dont get me wrong. But for 8 years Toronto has been starving for a player like Matthew knies. Great along the boards, can make those important passes and burry goals. He’s also been great in the playoffs. So for that reason he is un touchable.

Toronto will also prioritize D in the offseason. I saw a report that both pesce and Necas won’t be back this offseason and the canes will go a different route. If this is the case I think Toronto would be all over trying to get pesces negotiation rights. So instead of losing him for nothing why not trade him for Timothy liljegrens OR nick Robertson’s RFA rights? Beats losing him for nothing

I think the Sharks hold off on that trade, though it could be tempting. They'd like his leadership in the dressing room (and they don't know if Couture will be healthy so they could use to keep the center depth...this season they want to be more competitive while still losing lots of games). I think they're hopeful they could get a similar price at the TDL and, if so, they wait until then so they can have him in the room for 3/4 of the season.
