Sens pass. Marner only becomes a Senator to play on a line with Brady otherwise it makes no sense for us.

That makes sense.
Anyway, if I am the Sens no way I would ever trade Brady. He is he heart and soul of the team.

Assuming that he wanted out of Ottawa? I know it would make more sense for him to go to a US team

Yeah, if he wanted out I think he would ask to be traded to the USA.

You don't understand the trade. There is already consensus on this. If this trade is what I think it is, this should be how it breaks down.

Trade Breakdown:
To CHI: Tavares (after his bonus is paid)
To TOR: Future Considerations

2nd part of trade:
To CHI: a 2026 1st round pick
To TOR: Connor Murphy

Agreed. As long as JT's $7m bonus is paid first.

The Leaf's get a solid D and $6.6M in cap space. If JT did not have a $11M Cap hit I would agree.

Who cares? JT is much better player than Murphy; no chance Leafs add anything. All moot b/c he doesn’t waive to join a bottom feeder anyway

Obviously you just ignored my response. You are still operating under the guise that the trade is JT for Murphy. It isn't. They are two separate trades taking place within the same transaction. Tavares does not have positive value at his full cap hit and TOR cannot afford to retain and still make the changes that they need to make.

I responded to another user, before your response so 🤷🏻. Tavares is still a very good nhl player but not worth his cap hit - we agree. To a team like Hawks - where cap doesn’t matter, he would be a great addition - similar idea to (but even better than) overpaying Foligno or Perry. Especially when you consider his actual salary is significantly less than cap hit.
But he’s most likely not waiving to go to Chicago and there is no chance Leafs retain, so moot point.
Murphy is in no way worth a 1st, Leafs can simply sign better or comparable player in FA

Murphy is easily worth what is likely to be a late 1st two years from now, and there are protections that can be included for that. Especially if there is retention involved. This has long been a consensus between fans here on CF.

As for JT, I think there is a chance that, if they sit down with him and have a frank conversation about him, his contract and his future. They could convince him to waive the last year of his contract so they can make the changes they need to make and for the opportunity to play with a young budding star and then come back and retire as a Leaf on a discount contract. If he doesn't waive and help the team out, I could see that souring their relationship and them moving on from him entirely. Then he would have to make the choice to either retire or move to a new team anyway. Which is a decision I think he would like to avoid, with his family being so established in TOR.

Should TOR blame him for not waiving? No. They signed him, it's a contractual obligation that he has every right to uphold and stay put. You can't blame any player for exercising their clause firmly. But, for the good of TOR's future and if he wants to finish his career there while strategically helping them, it might be a smart move.

No such thing as consensus on cap friendly 😂; I’d rather herd cats. For example - in no world is Murphy worth a 1st; he’s bottom pair on a competitive team. Even with retention, why would anyone burn a 1st - let alone a team like Leafs who have so few draft picks. Just sign a comparable (or better) player in FA

Because they need "win now" players. That is what contenders do.

Easy to find a better or comparable player via FA; just no need to waste a 1st on bottom pairing dman imo
