Description
Was talking to a current Kings exec who mentioned that the team was looking Marner with the approach that they would need salary retained next year but could afford a full extension at $12M after next season.

He mentioned the cap was going to rise by just over $4.3M in the 2025 offseason + $2M from Provorov comes off the books + they can save around $2M replacing Gavrikov with a cheaper options next summer. So in total they will free up $8.3M next summer. That means if they can. Fit Marner at $3.7M this year they can afford the extension once the retention is gone.

Also said that fans don't realize Marner has a $775k salary next season so a July 2nd trade with 50%-75% retained is completely reasonable as someone like SJ or Chi would happily take a 3rd to pay out $175k-375k in real money, the pick is worth much more than that and it gets them to the floor.

Except you don't have a full roster.

Also 4 year deal for Byfield would be the stupidest possible thing. Walks him straight to UFA

Even with 50% retention trading Clarke for Marner is stupid as hell. And like @dgibb10 said walking Byfield to UFA is just stupid. If Blake does either of those moves he should lose his job instantly

I think Brandt is probably one of the best defensemen not in the NHL and every team would want him. But at the same time, is that really what toronto would want in return for marner? I think they'd be looking for players who can help right now.

Byfield 8 years should be a priority ASAP. Anything under 9 mill you sign in a heartbeat imo. You bridge Byfield and I wouldn't be shocked you're looking at 13 mill AAV by the time his next contract rolls around

Byfield contract was just to fill out the roster. Complete guess on my part without looking at the details.

Re roster, most teams run a 21/22 team roster but I also didn't do the work to get Marner down to $3.7M which is what he said they were looking at internally. At that cap hit he seemed to see Byfield or Clarke as the primary piece of the return. Clarke being more expendable.

Pure speculation as to how Toronto would use him but I don't think it's far fetched to see him as a primary target for them. He can play 3RD and QB the PP. Unless they sell out for Montour or go for a Barrie/Ghost type player they will struggle to find a PP QB. Even though he is young Clarke can definitely still QB an NHL PP, he has an elite shot and offensive IQ.

Agreed, Byfield needs a long term deal. 5.5 underpaying as well, and if LA won't offer more than that some team should offersheet him at 8.5 it is only a 1st 2nd and 3rd totally worth it

Name the teams who ran a 21 man roster this past season. Name them.

Byfield is too good a player to be worth offer sheeting imo. I'd be pissed if an offer sheet came as LAK but I wouldn't think twice about not matching until that 4 1sts tier gets hit.

I also think they'd be stupid to let Byfield go unsigned that long anyway. You get Byfield done asap, and then figure out what you have to spend around him based off that.

Agreed I'd be PISSED too. Still with how good Byfield is, if LA isn't willing to give him a long term contract and not give him more than 7 I think every GM outside of maybe 3/5 teams should offersheet him

We Los Angeles fans are SO lucky to have an insider like you telling us what we could never figure out for ourselves. After all, as you say, "Kings fans genuinely have no understanding of the game."
(https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/830972) Or, as you said in slightly different words, "I've sat in the arena more times than you ever will. The lower bowl is largely Canadians who moved to Cali and the Kings are their second team.

The rest of the fan base is largely fair weather."

We clueless unsophisticated rubes thank you for the enlightenment from the bottom of our hearts.

100%. If there is any chance to get a player like Quinton Byfield at his age you jump on it.

But regardless of the kings cap troubles, I just can't see a scenario where they don't get byfield extended.

You deal with a cap crunch by taking hits on the secondary pieces. You don't let the most valuable asset you have walk out the door over a couple million dollars.

I'd trade any of Fiala, Gavrikov, Anderson, Doughty, PLD, Danault, Moore, Kempe for literally future considerations before I let Byfield leave.
