Exploring a Marner Trade to Get a Cup in NJ

Description
New Jersey has some unbelievable defensive depth. Their blueline is essentially set for the foreseeable future, resulting in them selling high on Seamus Casey. Mercer is a very good player, but he is no Mitch Marner. Marner will net you 35 goals and 100 points consistently, Mercer will not. The 13th overall selection will likely be a defenseman, which as previously stated is not needed by New Jersey. The addition of Marner and the hiring of a decent head coach propels this team to a Cup.

I used the Eichel deal as a comp for this. There is no one in this deal on the level of Alex Tuch, thus the inclusion of the 2024 first. I feel like I may be asking for too much, Just trying to test the waters on a Marner trade with NJ. I feel like it makes a lot of sense.

100% if Marner gets traded he'll win a Cup within 2 years after the trade.

He'll join the ex Leaf scapegoat Cup winner Wall of Fame; with Kadri, Kessel, T. Kaberle, L. Murphy and potentially F. Anderson.

It is literally impossible for the Devil's pick to be 13th OA. Also nobody is paying Marner 13M. He is far more likely to make 9M on his next deal

Leaf fans desperate to sell Marner for a kings ransom with just a year left...no thank you. Rather have those pieces long term even just to use them for longer term less crazy price players.

No team will ever win the Cup w Marner on it. Complete opposite of what you want come playoffs. Does not show up at all. Soft ass little baby. Leafs need to trade him as soon as their season ends.

Marner replaces Mercers spot in the lineup (huge upgrade), Casey really has no spot on this team with the rightside consisting of 3 star NHLers who all have term on their contracts, and the 13th overall selection won't get the Devils someone nearly as needle pushing as Marner.

13m may be a bit on the higher side in terms of estimates, but NJD really shouldn't have any issue facilitating a Marner extension. The cap ceiling will rise significantly when that extension begins, and it will really only be a 3 - 4m raise above what he's making now.

I know Marner has a bit of a negative presence in the media right now, but don't get it twisted. Marner is among the leagues best wingers and would instantly be one of this teams biggest and most dangerous offensive weapons while also being a big time factor on the PK. He transforms this team into a strong contender. Not sure what there is to hate here

Would you say this about Matthews, who has similar success in the post season? It's unfair to judge Marners post season play in a vacuum, because every single Toronto player disappears in the post season. These are pro athletes we are talking about, it's not like they just phone it in when the regular season is done. The issue in Toronto is behind the bench, not on the ice.

Did you happen to miss the part where I said there would be an extension agreed upon prior to the trade to ensure Marner isn't a pending UFA? You will never find another player like Marner to become available via trade, selling high on youngsters who have no real role in NJ is the best course of action.

If you don't like it, Toronto would be more than happy to keep Mitch.

Maybe, maybe not. All the teams that can hypothetically afford his current and next contract are pretenders at best right now.

Also Toronto is far from the only team that's done that. Eichel literally just beat former teammate Reinhart to win the cup last year. Reinhart and Tkachuk could both win this year. How about Toews and Nichushkin being handed handed to the Avs for basically nothing. McDonagh was the Rangers captain before winning 2 cups in Tampa. ROR to the Blues too. Oshie to the Caps. It's literally every year

Totally agree. I'm not in the trade Marner camp, just trying to see what kind of avenues the Leafs could go down if push comes to shove

I left Bozak off my ex Leaf Cup winner list, because his name was never a scapegoat. But the Leafs didn't like their center depth with him and Kadri behind Matthews and he was allowed to leave so JT can get signed. 1st year away from the Leafs he wins a Cup also.

Hahahaha my apologies, I didn’t mean to upset like that. I know they’re pro athletes, the great ones turn it up come playoff time…that’s what separates them from the rest of the pack. And you can add Matthews to that as well…another who disappears. The problem is on the ice, on the bench, front office, etc. My personal opinion, they need some players with some nastiness to them. Guys who will do whatever it takes to win. They don’t have that. Bertuzzi would be the closest one. No, not the best at anything, but will give everything he has inside him to win. Matthews and Marner, nope…they’re way too talented not to show up in the playoffs, but reason why is cause they don’t have that “fire” inside of them. You know who they need, Brady Tkachuk. I know Leafs fans will tear me apart for saying that, call him a crybaby, etc etc…you can’t tell me that guy doesn’t bring it every single night. NHL needs Brady in the playoffs.

His massive cap hit.

Marner has a full NMC and is a 1 year rental with a massive cap hit.

You will not recieve anything close to this.

Yeah you can keep Mitch marner at 13 million dollars a year lmao. Additionally Mitch Marner cannot sign an extension until after the 2024 draft so your trade is illegal

You don’t even have NJD able to field a full roster

No, I'm saying I'd rather have those players long term without those crazy prices, ie Marner's extension. Please keep him for $13m a year.

And also, can't extend until after 2024 draft...so...it doesn't work
