Helping Toronto Get Below the Cap Ceiling

Description
Personally, I'd prefer to get a more temporary forward (like Bozak, with only one year left on contract) to fill the C2 slot. I think Barzal will be sensational, but I'd prefer him in a C3 role until he fully learns the NHL game.

However, Bozak has a no trade clause in his contract. With so many prospects panning out and after finishing ahead of NYI, there's no way Bozak would waive his no trade clause to NYI, so instead, I traded for Kadri instead. There's no denying Kadri would make a tremendous C2 behind Tavares and his reasonable contract makes him all the more enticing. However, his production was better than Bozak's last year, so I threw in a 1st rounder rather than just Beau, Bailey and Vande Sompel.

At the end of his deal, Toronto sheds 4 million+ in cap, getting them below the cap ceiling, and the Isles get that coveted C2 they've been looking for, along with the restoration of the vaunted E=MC2 line.

NYI
  1. Kadri, Nazem

Détails additionnels:
I considered Bozak, but he had a no trade clause and Kadri didn't. I added in a few extra pieces to make up for the difference between Kadri and Bozak.
TOR
  1. Bailey, Josh (1 300 000 $ retained)

Détails additionnels:
Between a retained Bailey and Beauvillier, you'd be getting around the same point production of Kadri and Martin, with Bailey and Beauvillier being both younger and on cheaper contracts. I'd expect Vande Sompel to start out in the AHL, so he would count as part of the cap exchange.

Didn't know Kadri was dirty. I just knew that he's young, was long touted to be a great young talent and that he broke 60 points last season. Of course I knew Martin was dirty, but he was OUR dirty player. That, we need to step up our physical game anyways. Ever since Martin left, we don't really have any intimidators outside Clutterbuck.

Kadri won't be traded since Babs loves him, and the team loves Martin, but I think it's a pretty good exchange. The only thing I'd like to add is that currently, contrary to people flipping out on the site, the Leafs don't have a cap issue since they're using LTIR in the off season, something most people and even some hockey execs didn't think was possible, but confirmed by Lamoriello and Bill Daley

Yeah I saw Lupul was IRed, and thought that there might be an LTIR in place, but by the looks of the TML page on CapFriendly, it didn't say he was. Wasn't exactly sure how to proceed. This was part of the reason why I tried to make the trade as even value as possible; even in a vacuum the trade would still make sense for both teams.

Well as I said, I'm not thinking they'll trade him but I will credit you on the value you put for him. A lot of people miss the true value of him. Good job

The weakest position of the Leafs, looking at it as club depth, it is the Center. Bozak has played 1rst line C many years because there was no other option...even Moore played 1rst line when he was in TOR previously....
Putting aside if the trade value is fair or not, IMO leafs will not trade a C, look that we are keeping Fehr in case someone gets hurt...signed B.Smith and Mueller as somewhat of an 'insurance'. Even from the 3 prime coming UFAs JVR/Komarov/Bozak I still think Bozak is the most likely to be resigned due to our weak C depth. There is only Brooks as a C prospect and will play first season in the Marlies (the other one is Gauthier which is IR until next year, so who knows if will become an asset and that would be for 4th line C)....Nylander eventually could transition to C, but how long will it take him to have FOW% 56.7 like Bozak just had?.
Mat "daddy" Martin has his role on the team and won't be let go...even though personally I think his contract becomes really expensive on its last year, when Matthews and Marner are due extension

There is absoluely no logic is suggseting that the Leafs have to trade away players to get below the cap. So if that the is basis of the trade, forget it.
Kadri is signed for five years, hardly worth the trade to the Leafs. As "Allendueunico" suggested, Leafs do not have NHL. depth at centre if ever a player is injured or trade. So Bozak and especially Kadri aren't going to be traded. And Martin has a role on the team, and as 4th liner, doesn't hurt his team when he's on the ice.

Thanks for preaching what needs to be said, would also like to point out that Kadri was 5th in Goals for Centers IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE. Not only that but he played against top competition AND we have him locked in at 4.5m for 5 more years. If you have a league that doesn't include Nashville he might be one of the best bargain contracts out there.

Thanks LeafsFan. Just a little insight to Kadri's 30 goals, and why I don't think slotting players on # 1/2/3 lines is appropriate. Kadri scored a lot PP goals an points as the LWer on PP with Matthews and Nylander (replacing Hyman). With Marleau on the team, maybe Kadri sees less time on PP. But you're right, if he continues he solid play of last year, he's a bargain.
