I know the penguins have good connections with AZ, but Wisconsin is a better program.
Not a good sign.
I wouldn't be worried about it. All of Whitelaw, Stramel, Lucius, and Stange are transferring out.
It has nothing to do with going to a worse program. And everything to do with the HC at Wisconsin. Frankly put, he doesn't give a crap about player futures. Either in improving or developing them for the NHL or their life after college. He's there to win games, and win games only.
He has his guys, guys he either brought with him or ones that he is bringing in. All of which are older players, and very few have NHL draft pedigree. None of whom are the ones leaving.
The 4 leaving were given the short end of the stick at Wisconsin. Rarely played, low minutes, and very few opportunities to play with actual talent. Hence, low productivity. Of the 4, Cruz got the most TOI and time within the top-six, and had the best production of the 4 because of it. He's still getting the hell out of dodge.
That school is not conducive to, or cares, about an NHL prospects overarching development.
AZ may be a lesser school, but it'll be 10× better for Cruz's development going forward.

Arizona State isn’t a bad spot to play…and they like the more offensive style, so he could put up some numbers there. Big Ten is the conference most similar to pro style game (for substance, they all play on pro size rinks). But Wisconsin has played more defensive system, so it’s possible a forward doesn’t feel the fit there.
He has his guys, guys he either brought with him or ones that he is bringing in. All of which are older players, and very few have NHL draft pedigree. None of whom are the ones leaving.
Christian Fitzgerald probably gets a chance.
But yeah, Hastings track record so far isn’t great for developing prospects. And guys who want to play at next level seem to be allergic to him (add Boston Buckberger, Will Skahan, and Aiden Fink to list of guys that have walked away from him).

yeah joining the NCHC helps a bit on competition level maybe but still. That school just doesn't have the program. It takes years to build up a decent program. They don't come over night.
we can argue on it over and over. It doesn't matter.
Until I see that program actually look like a real program. It's always just going to be the current vision of AZ that I have. Just like Bowling Green will always be Bowling Green and not a great place to develop until otherwise noted.
