Colton for Dowd

Description
I know there have been rumors about Dowd having crazy high value, but I don't fully buy into it. He's a valuable player, but I don't think anyone gives up a first for him. A second seems right. And since I also peg Colton at around a second, I thought there was a basis to work with.

I may be a little aggressive with adding the picks here, just because I do think Dowd will be in demand (partially due to his low salary), but figured I'd see what folks thought. Colton has double the points, which justified trying for the ask in my eyes.

The Caps might consider this but I doubt they would want to pay ontop of Dowd. Could see a 1 for 1 due to cap constraint but no chance they do this with losing positioning in the draft

I don't think they'd mind switching a 3rd for a 5th. I'd be interested in this deal nonetheless. It's intriguing that could help both teams.

I don't think I asked for the moon. Mainly just wanted to get a bit better pick to make the next trade.

Kovacevic for a late 3rd value seems right to me. Big RD on a minimum contract who can kill penalties.

I mean if Landy is fully Landy that’s one situation I could see (maybe the only one) where Ritchie plays 3C. I don’t know that Dowd is the right guy stylistically, check his NHL edge stats below 50th percentile in top speed and speed burst, and he is in the 96% for his shooting % (is that driving his numbers and is it sustainable?) especially between 2 speed merchants like Wood and LOC. Colton does look like the guy they could move for salary cap reasons.

Definitely didn't overprice on your side. I just don't know if the caps are looking to move back in these drafts when they are pushing towards a rebuild

I'm not too concerned about his shooting percentage, as it's his defensive ability that makes him an asset. I can't say I'm not hesitant about the lack of speed, but I tend to think it would still work. If not, he can be flipped pretty easily.

All else equal, I'd rather have Colton. But if moving him allows the team to sign Drouin, I think you have to make that move.

Agree on the importance of having Landy with Ritchie. I think that every acgm I have made with Ritchie as 3C has that same set up, and it's intentional.

Yeah. To me Dowd is hugely overrated for the Avs. I feel like a 4th line center isn’t a big need and Dowd doesn’t match the relentless forecheck approach that we use. Is he a good player for his role, sure, is he below market value, yes, is he worth a 3rd round pick to the Avs… maybe but not much more. He is worth much more than that to Washington and that’s ok.

They focused waaay too much on aggressive forechecking when constructing the curreny bottom six imo. That's not why they won the Cup. The won because possession players bought into backchecking, which spurred their transition game.

Dowd is a good 4C who can slide up to the third line in a pinch. And he's affordable and should outplay his salary. That's a good guy to have. Colton at 4M means you lose someone else you don't wanna lose.

I remember when the Dowd to COL thing started up initially and decided to read up on him a bit more and he mentioned himself in one interview that he wasn't the fastest guy but that he was playing between two fast guys. I don't think that's too much of an issue if he's used correctly (to his strengths - as a defensive 4C). Just as long as it doesn't end up being RyJo Mk II.

The RyJo thing immediately came to mind, WAS fast and COL fast are two different things.

The question really is more how you want your 4th line to play. Dowd would make me think more Stephane Yelle. Not uber-fast but can keep up for the most part and does all the other bits well.

I also thought of RyJo but concluded it might be an overreaction to rule out other players because of him. I could easily see the 4th line working. Dowd can help in the dzone and outlets go to one of the wings to spur transition.
