What motivation do they have?


To the fans, their teams' young guys always seem to be untouchable. But to get a player like Marchenko, you probably have to include one of your "untouchables". Berard is a real good prospect, but he aint it in a deal like this.

Motivation for CBJ would be gaining young talent a little further out than Marchenko, as their timeframe of competitiveness is probably (at least internally) acknowledged back a few years. But CBJ would need to be overwhelmed with an offer- something like 2024 1st + Perrault + a lesser player who could be on the roster in 2024/25 (Brodz, Edstrom, Vesey, etc).

Spot on. Even if the timeframe to compete is 4-5 years, he's mid-prime. The only way he's moved is if it's a mind-blowing proposal or a true upgrade. For NYR, that looks like one of Laf or Perreault.
