And yes, Yegor doesn't likely score 30 here as Lindy hated him. We likely get nothing close to the return we got for Toffoli when Yegor could barely stay in the lineup. He simply wasn't going to get top 6 time here.

Fitz's worst call was to extend Lindy when he could have waited out the year he still had left.

I agree with the historically bad goaltending and bad luck part with injuries...but Lindy was a big part of the failure.

There are also other factors:
The injuries were major, not even just the missed games but Jack and Meier have been played injured in a significant portions of their games
Marino, Mercer, and Siegenthaler have taken big steps backwards this year, which decimated the defense even tho luke and Nemec have effectively replaced Graves and Severson.

The bottom 6 depth got hammered when Mcleod went away (NJD really fell apart after this)

Going from a bottom 6 of: Mcleod-Meier-Holtz-Haula-Lazar-Bastian earlier in the year to Mercer-Lazar-Holtz-Tierney-Macdermid-Nosek was devastating.

Toffoli was an upgrade over Yegor.
Meier even despite his struggles is a significant upgrade over Zetterlund

Going from Mcleod, Wood, Tatar, Boqvist to Nosek Tierney Holtz Willman was the problem

Problem was injuries, youth, goaltending.

We lost Graves, Severson in off-season…Hamilton, Siegenthaler to injuries. Replaced with Hughes, Nemec, Bahl, etc.

Last year we were youngest team in almost a decade to reach 2nd round. This year, if we made playoffs, we would have been youngest team there (by over a year).

I love seeing Zetterlund and Sharangovich finding success…but losing them wasn’t the issue. And Fitzy got extended mid-year…he isn’t going anywhere.
