Description
Two offseason buy-low trade opportunities:

1) Kotkaniemi. I have no idea if Canes management has an appetite to move him IRL, but plenty of Canes fans on this site seem ready to cut bait, some even going down the buyout route.

What if Tocchet could work his magic and put him with the right linemates? I could see a very effective 3rd line with him between Joshua and Garland, for example. Or maybe developing some chemistry with a guy like Podz.

I'd say it's a big risk because of his contract, but even if it didn't work out the buyout on his deal is very manageable. Long-term I think he can still turn into a very good 3C with the ability to fill in at 2C when injuries hit.

2) Graves. I thought he would've been a nice fit with VAN when he was a UFA, but he went to PIT and hasn't worked out very well. If he could fit better in a Tocchet system then he's another solid defensive Dman with size.

I swapped Mikheyev straight-up for him here, although there could be minor picks involved too. It's a change-of-scenery deal for both guys, and PIT gets the guy with a much shorter term.

Thoughts?

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't this team's weaknesses top 6 wingers and RD? You did not address either.

Issue with signing one of them is cap and we hopefully have one that could make the team so improving depth all around and having deep Center depth is going to be more helpful in the long run. Though Graves as a fall back if Zadorov doesn't sign isn't a bad thing but also depends on how close management feels D-Petey is. I think if they feel he'll be pushing for a spot mid-season signing Cole again to a 1 year deal makes more sense and possibly another LHD of Cole's ilk if they feel Wolanin/Brisebois as injury replacements aren't good enough.

I don't mind these adds but Big Z can't be top 4 RHD. He said he wasn't comfortable on the right earlier this year. Maybe Soucy but prefer another Dman if Graves added.

I think Blueger would have to walk and maybe even Joshua at $3.5M. Rather see a legit top 6 guy and cheap on bottom 6 vs rushing to overpay depth guysm

From a Canes’ perspective - where do we sign?

I agree that Graves could be good for us but I don't see any reason to take on the risk the term on his deal. We don't need LHD and if we did we could find other ones. I'd rather keep Zadorov.

Kotkaniemi is interesting and has some upside but again the risk is in the term of his deal. Being buyout friendly is a bonus though. For that price I wouldn't mind but I'd like some assurance that he'll be put in a good spot with good linemates to succeed. Your suggestion of putting him with Joshua and Garland could work as they can energize anyone it seems. It would be worth letting Pettersson know about it as well.

That bottom 6 is gonna struggle to score. Rather than trading for KK’s 4.8M cap hit I’d use that cap to sign a better winger. Suter or Blueger can be 3C (or sign someone better than Blueger with the extra money). And rather than sign Zadorov (assuming we bring in Graves) I’d sign an actual RHD like Tanev or Carrier

KK is literally a cap dump lol why on earth would you give up a pick for him. That is madness .
Carolina couldn't dump him for free right now and you're offering a 3rd round pick to pick up his entire contract ?!
