Absolutely not. No 24 1st, no top 4 D prospect, no shot at Buch. You guys have 843 prime D prospects, you will not be able to play them all.

What is the expectation for the return? Late 1st and a prospect at the most?

To be fair, it may now be more valuable at the draft to add something if he wants. tears of joy

The apparent ask was something around Mercer or Holtz and a 1st from Jersey.

At the very least more than a 2nd, a goalie we don't need, and 2 prospects with minimal to no NHL potential

The ask is why it never happened lol.

Your management was trying to do business and your ownership came in making ridiculous demands.

That's not accurate at all. The trade was done but Calgary's owner nixed because he wanted to make the playoffs. The price was met and agreed upon.

Regardless this offer isn't even remotely close

You'd need to make it the 24 1st and perhaps Wallinder to have a shot. I mean, they're already talking about extending him. It's going to hurt some to get him.

My recollection was the trade was done and Calgary ownership nixed it and said unless Mercer was involved they were keeping Markstrom because they believed they could go on a playoff run.

Don't recall any confirmation at all that New Jersey had agreed to make Mercer part of the deal.

Calgary initially told NJ that Markstrom would cost them Mercer plus. The plus Calgary asked for was assumed to be NJ's 2024 1st but that was never confirmed. NJ didn't want to trade Mercer they offered Holtz plus instead and they wanted retention on Markstrom too. Calgary really didn't want to retain but might have been willing to retain if they were getting Mercer/Holtz + the 2024 1st.

NJ was expected to make the playoffs if they got Markstrom in which case the earliest their pick could be would have been 16th OA. Now their pick is going to be a bit earlier than that so it's worth a bit more than it was then.

Myself, I wanted Mercer at the deadline but I don't like him that much anymore. Mercer can't seem to beat out Fiala or Nosek at center and has been relegated to 3rd line winger with Nosek as his center. It's very close between Mercer and Holtz for me now. I'm leaning towards preferring Holtz.

It's funny because NJD was trying to do it to make playoffs, Calgary ownership squashed it because they were trying to make playoffs, and... Neither are going to make the playoffs.

I don't think Markstrom would've gotten New Jersey there, honestly. Then again, every team in the EC wild card mix seems hell bent on not making the playoffs.

Anyhow most of us Flames fans figure it was Murray Edwards meddling in hockey operations again. And we're almost certainly right about that!

The sad part is you didn't need to go add marque players like this, just a decent dman and maybe a depth forward. How spending a couple middling picks or prospects is look at as " mortgaging the future" is ridiculous.

I never said they agreed to make Mercer available. I said Mercer is what Calgary wanted. The deal likely involved Holtz and their 1st

If you can't nail it down to one or the other than you don't know that they actually agreed to either one lol.

Again, everything I read was that they had an agreement, ownership blocked it, demanded Mercer, NJD balked, and the Calgary said they were holding him.

You are more than welcome to your POV on how it played out. Regardless the key words were had an agreement. And considering Holtz and their 1st were widely linked to being involved it shows how OP's proposal is insultingly weak

My POV has about as much credibility behind it as yours considering when those names came up NJD suddenly balked and Calgary stood their ground.

BTW I agree that that deal doesn't get it done. (I wouldn't trade for Markstrom to begin with, in Detroit's position) That being said, the whole point was that it's not going to get done at all if Calgary's ownership doesn't lower their demands... Which is why it didn't get done.

Yeah, the return on the Blues/Buchnevich trade isn't enough. As others already said it would help by adding a defensive prospect and it's preferable to add the 24 1st instead of the 25 1st (however, to me this isn't a dealbreaker but I would expect the return to be bigger as the 25 1st is slightly less valuable to a retooling team than the 24 1st). I do like Berggren as some sort of reclamation project though, but I imagine his projected value is probably lower for us than it is for you.

What about:
24/25 1st
Wallinder
Buium

For:
Buchnevich
B-prospect/pick

There's really nothing to reclaim with Berggren.

He's an NHL level middle six winger who's getting ****ed over because he's waiver exempt.
