Sens decline. There is like 5 RD better in free agency that we can overpay and keep our 1st.

Detroit ain't taking Krug even if you send Buch with him lol.

We've got enough defensive problems without adding a $6.5M one.

This series of moves makes the Blues significantly worse now and probably in the future as well.

Cap is a good asset to have. But having cap with a broken structure is a fools wish. Armstrong does pretty well at recruiting guys on PTOs. But that doesn’t mean we are going to attract them. Draft picks could turn out to be core players. But that’s also far from a sure thing. Heck it’s very far from a 50% gaurantee.

Good luck. There aren’t 5 RD in free agency who can successfully handle 20 minutes a night. I also don’t see any big ticket free agents at a premium position opting to go to Ottawa at the moment either given how poor Ottawa has been for a long while now.

I’m not saying you guys should move your 1st. But I also don’t see things turning around in the near future without moving it. There is no defensive structure in place anywhere on the roster, and it would take a miracle for an 18 year old defenseman to change that in the next 3-5 years.

Parayko, Colton is most likely not even worth a first round pick yet alone a top 10, OTT declines

I'd pay a 5th just to make the Hayes back to the Rangers trades on here stop happening.

One of Demelo, Montour, Roy, Pesce, Tanev + keeping our first is 10000x better than Parakyo + no first. Sens will have enough cap to throw a massive deal at one of them.

I'm not defending the "5 better RD in free agency" comment - but trading that pick like that is goofy.

Trading a top 10 pick for the ages 31-36 seasons of a pretty-good-but-not-great D is not the way to be long-term successful either. If you were trading for prime Chara, yea, you can make the case.

I wasn’t trying to make the case to trade it for Parayko. But I’m not really sure you are going to find a player that you can deem value wise would be worth it become available. I was in turn trying to state if you’re wanting to have any semblance of a team defense that’s competitive the best route is to trade the 1st. For what though, is probably not conceivable. You can only continually sink and draft top 10 so long before you start to wonder if there’s a real flaw in going the route of drafting/developing these guys into a winning formula.

You can hypothetically go that route if you want. I’m not sure I’d want to throw a massive deal at any of those guys long term and hope that it fixes the underlying issues, that mind you drafting high consistently hasn’t really fixed either.

I’d imagine the best route would be to spend the budget on the coach that you think can fix the issues, and then buy in to that and start to litter in vets. It’s just not ideal for Canadian teams to try and lure free agents without shopping in the middle tier and overspending.

Why would any of those guys want to go somewhere that’s pretty dysnfuctional especially with it being in Canada, when the position in general is in pretty high need?

Coaching without a doubt is the biggest priority. Drafting was absolutely brutal under Dorion and his staff, but we can't tie that in with our new management who we haven't even seen draft or do anything yet. Dorion and Melnyk killed this team but I think it's fair to say the new management, staff, GMs etc all seem like a big step in the right direction.

Our biggest issue on the ice has been defensively and goaltending. We haven't had a true #1 RD since Karlsson, I think doing what needs to be done to get one of these insanely talented RD in this free agency would be a massive step towards fixing this team, and fill the bottom 6 out with vets who can bring a winning mentality.

Our prospect pool is literally one of the worst due to Dorion trading ALL of our picks prior, and it has been a disaster. Parayko is a hell of a player but not worth a top 10 pick to our team.

I think you overestimate what will be available in terms of RD in UFA.

Maybe, but doesn't change the fact the trade stinks for us.
