making Guentzel fit using AFP projections

Description
Seeing if they can keep Guentzel/Jarvis/Necas, only using contract projections from AFP Analytics projections. (Source: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R0mzG_2auhSGxLZ_LoiE9EwK8enxbNbw0BGqDVmKlu0/edit). Some deals around league min used for folks not in the sheet.

It's doable, but tight. Beyond the issue of having five centers, there doesn't seem to be a viable way to sign Guentzel, Necas, and Jarvis without moving one of Drury or KK.

lol if that is all guentzel is getting then he would have just re-signed in pittsburgh
I also think carolina would have to give up more than a measly low 4th (and receive a high 6th) to dump KK.

KK isn't worth his contract especially long term. You'll have to add a lot for some team to take him.

I can see that. Thinking is that San Jose needs to reach the cap floor, and is fairly bereft of NHL centers. At least one SJ fan ACGM took him with a 4th and sent a player back.

San Jose says heck no.

That contract has 6 year left on it. The amount of draft capital to move that to SJS would be insane. They have no problem getting to the floor. They need to sign like 10+ players and only need like $13 million to get the floor. I assume it will be around $63million.

Vlasic and Logan’s contracts plus dead cap make getting to the floor pretty easy.

Canes aren’t going to dump KK. Not to mention they can keep all those guys and KK. Don’t trade for Maata, and play Smith at 3LD. And to keep KK, at least one of Necas, Drury, or Chatfield gets a couple hundred thousand less on their contracts. Not to mention that Martinook very likely doesn’t get that much, so the cap problem just gets solved there.

Why would Carolina dump Kotkaniemi? He's an excellent player on an excellent contract long term at the age of just 23... ew

What will make this far more doable is if you don't overpay Chatfield, acquire an overpaid Maatta, overpay Drury AND Martinook... they can sign all three, keep Kotkaniemi and be fine.

Grier would be dumb not to take that. 23 years old and already one of the best chance creators in the NHL. He needs capable linemates, and that with higher ice time in San Jose makes him a PRIME breakthrough candidate.

I agree. Kotkaniemi for free is a no brainer for a team like the Sharks. He’s only 23 and the Sharks have a ton of cap space.

I know I'm one of the few that thinks he's actually worth his deal, but he's been good in Carolina. He had 40 points last year and is an ELITE defensive presence. A giant cold spell seems to have warped perceptions of Kotkaniemi, and if he wasn't a former Canadien, genuinely no one would have noticed
