That’s obviously A LOT for just one year of Nelson
We’d be better off with someone a little younger who could be here a bit longer

But it is a good looking group

Nelson is a great player but he doesn't fit the Sabres' timeline, he only has one year remaining, and that's a ton to give up for a 3C

I'll admit I thought he had 2 years left. Let's pretend it's a 2025 protected 1st.

Good point. But giving up a 2024 1st and a 4th-liner for one year Nelson is market value whether this off season or at the 2025 TDL

Calling Krebs a 4th liner is disingenuous
Even if he was still on the “4th” line- he’s not- he has more value than your typical line 4 player

And it looks like we are gonna miss the playoffs,
so that’s gonna me a pretty valuable pick

Peyton Krebs: 68 games, 3 goals, 11 assists

Eric Robinson has potted the same 3 goals, in 26 less games, while playing exclusively on the fourth line w/o pp time
Defenseman Henry Jokiharju has 3 goals.
Zemgus Girgensons has 7 goals in 16 less games
Tyson Jost has 2 goals in about half the games Krebs has played.

4th-liner

???

What is his value? He doesn't score.

I'd say a defensive/checking line role. And that's about it.

He’s a former 1st round pick & you’re comparing him to Robinson- that’s a joke
Krebs is still young with upside

A former 1st round pick who is still young & has upside
Literally NONE of that applies to Robinson, which is why i called the comparison a joke

About the same as Casey Mittelstadt’s value was when he was 23 years old.

And somehow Mitts still bloomed into a good Top6 player
Apparently it’s inconceivable to some that Krebs still has that upside

I'd be happy with this trade. But I agree with the others pointing out this seems pointless from Buffalo ends considering Nelson only has 1 yr left and is in his 30s. But value wise I say it is fair

So his value, at 23 yrs old with 200+ NHL games, is his potential?

If they were going to do this (and I don't know enough about Krebs to know whether the Isles would), it would probably make more sense to play Nelson on the wing in the top-6 than it does to have him at 3C. Instead of paying Trenin $2.5MM to be LW4, use that money on a 3C to keep Brock in the top-6.

OK, Krebs for Wahlstrom straight up. Would you do that?

Krebs - 23YO - 203 games, 19G 44A
Wally - 23YO - 192 games, 34G 33A

Both are young former first-rounders so they still have "potential", and you're getting the better goal scorer to boot.

I’d personally rather have Krebs
His scoring has been hampered by our coaching staff putting him in a role as our defensive Center
Now that Mittelstadt has been traded, it appears they’re gonna give him more of a chance to show his offensive skills
I’m personally not looking to “sell low” on Krebs,
and i don’t think the Sabres are looking to move him either

Mittelstadt was much more advanced at this point in his career than Krebs currently is.

Mittlestadt through age-23 season: 195 GP, 33 G - 47 A - 80 PTS, 14:25 TOI. Averages out to about 34 pts/82 GP.
Krebs through age-23 season: 203 GP, 19 G - 44 A - 63 PTS, 13:35 TOI. Averages out to about 25 pts/82 GP.

And if you want to point out that Krebs has been saddled with less offensive linemates, you have to then also acknowledge that early in Mittlestadt's career some of his most common linemates were the likes of Rasmus Asplund, Conor Sheary, Jimmy Vesey, and pre-breakout Tage Thompson.

I don't think Krebs is a bum, but at this point his value seems to lie more in hoping a change of scenery helps him than in his former draft pedigree.

Oh yeah, I'm getting stuck in the weeds there on Krebs' value, but I think a pick that is #8 currently and a change of scenery guy like Krebs is fair value for one year of Nelson - even if I'm not sure he makes a ton of sense in Buffalo. I think the Sabres are close but Nelson feels more like a finishing move for a strong contender than a guy that goes from one bubble team to another.

As I said well up the page, I thought he had 2 years when I made the agm and to pretend it's a 2025 1st
