Didn't Matthews make it clear by resigning with Leafs when he was one year away from being UFA, that he no intention of signing/playing with Arizona.

No, it's a sincere trade. As much as I love Matthews and Marner, Leafs aren't winning the cup with them making a combined 26 million per year. It's just not feasible to ice a deep roster. Those two guys would have to be Superman and Batman every night. And that's too much pressure for any athlete.

Leafs have drafted very well as of late. With this haul they will have tons of great young players.

If the Leafs get bounced again in the first round, which I think is very likely, big changes need to be made. Leafs management should be able to convince Matthews and Marner to play elsewhere. Both for the team's long-term success and for their own personal success, they have to be traded.

No matter what happens in the playoffs both Matthews and Marner will be Leafs next season.

MLSE is a money making machine.

They're not dumping the 2 biggest poster boys.

Winning in the playoffs is a bonus but not a must.

So the Leafs get bounced in the first round....That's better than 16 teams that didn't make the playoffs, and tied with seven others. So you seem to be suggesting that Matthews and Marner would like to traded to a top eight team. That certainly isn't Arizona.
Not sure where Matthews and Marner can find much more personal success than they can with the Leafs......certainly not Arizona. Now is you had suggested Florida, Avs or Vegas, I might agree with you.
By the way, for the teams long term success (the Leafs), if Matthews and Marner are traded from the Leafs, those two players don't give a crap about the Leafs long term success.

Matthews and Marner will make Arizona competitive and they will be a playoff team. Free agents will be attracted to play there. Pretty soon that team will be like Florida or Vegas, and with a new stadium possibly on the horizon, even more free agents will sign there.

And I agree about your last point. Matthews told me all I needed to know when he only signed a 4 year extension. I think if the Leafs were seriously interested in pursuing a Cup they would have made these moves last summer. But it's never too late to fix a mistake. They got rid of the Dubas mistake almost by accident but at least he's gone and there's an adult in charge now. So the Leafs are in better hands from a management perspective. The next mistake to get rid of is Shanahan. And then the possibility of trading the core becomes more realistic.

Coyotes might be playing in Salt Lake City soon.

Their latest shell game is almost up.

Pull the plug.

Arizona doesn't even want them.

Yeah... TOR is not going full rebuild for no reason.

No team is just going to take on that cap hit.

And if the reason for trading them is that together they aren't enough to win, other teams know that too.

Also, why in hell would either player waive to go to a team no where near ready to compete for a cup that would have to sell all their futures to get them?

Get serious.

Well Brad Trevling may be an adult, but it's not even an average NHL GM. Seems to history of the Leafs this century....hiring poor GMs.
