That's an easy no for the Leafs. It's easy to tell who's the more valuable player, the 35 year old bottom 6C who's signed til he's 39 or the 24 year old RD who you have re-signed at 2 mil aav.

The defenseman that can't break into the Leafs lineup and is a perfect stopgap until Morrow can take a top 4 role, or the guy that finished 4th in Selke voting last year?

Where's he going to finish in Selke voting this year? Definitely not the top 4 or 5, even top 10. Should we expect his defensive game to come back after it has fallen apart this season? Not at 35+ years old. Basically in signing Liljegren for so little money you've removed any incentive that might exist for the Leafs to move him. They could just sign him to a similar amount, put him on a 3rd pair, and hope for the same jump in his game you are.

I was told selke voting didn't matter when I brought up how kotkaniemi has never had single vote ever after you called him an elite defensive forward

If he can't break into the Leafs top 6 now, would he want to sign in Toronto? He's been frozen out in favor of Joel Edmundson, Ilya Lybushkin and Simon Benoit. Not exactly high praise.

Staal will finish top 10 in Selke voting on pure nepotism.

Well even if he doesn't want to sign in Toronto. he's a young RD who's shown he can play NHL minutes. You'd be outbid easily with a declining aging center, a contract with problematic term, that doesn't address any of the needs of the Leafs.

Can't help but notice you currently have an $11 million anchor in that role, this dude could do almost the same thing of a quarter of the price.

The 11 million anchor still scores at a 2C rate and can at least pretend he's a 2C until the contract disappears after next season. Jordan Staal isn't even a 2C on a team with among the worst center depths in the league.

Do you just say things on here and hope they are right? Liljegren plays around 19 minutes a night lmao, he is a great 2RD. His metrics have been great, too.

Nobody is helping you take that Staal contract. Wayy too much money and term for a bottom 6 C you can find anywhere in free agency. Especially not one signed until he's 39.

Tavares is one year removed from 80pts. He's doing fine, just a down year. Staal is a 30pt bottom 6C.

I legitimately can't tell if you're trolling or not. GG.

This guy will make posts trading for Leaf players, then try to convince Leaf fans the players he traded for aren't that good. I'm convinced Caniac is an AI chatbot being used in a social experiment tbh.

You really trying to argue Carolina's center depth is bad? Are you high or drunk? Tavares isn't playing like a 2C anymore. Staal will at least continue to be a dominant chance creating center who will finish top 5 in Selke voting. He'll do everything Tavares is doing better than Tavares, extends the Leafs window with cheap scoring depth, and gets to go home to Ontario (yeah, I know Thunder Bay is in the middle of nowhere and like 5 hours from Toronto, but it's close enough for this).

The Canes have played Kotkaniemi as their 2C for most of the season and are trying to say they have good center depth? RIdiculous. Almost as ridiculous as saying that the 35+ year old center who has never scored at Tavares' current pace in his entire career is somehow going to be a better player than him.

Oof, you don't watch Canes hockey huh? Kotkaniemi played 2C start of the season, scored at a PPG pace first 20 games, then Aho got hurt, so KK moved up to 1C, struggled, Drury started scoring as the 2C (about a half a point per game pace) and kept the spot. Since then, both Jarvis and Necas (who have also both had success as natural centers) have played in that role, oh and Staal STILL gets more TOI than Kuznetsov... just admit you've done no research and are trying to push a braindead narrative

Kuznetsov's 5on5 icetime in Carolina: 12:51 per game
Staals' 5on5 icetime in Carolina (the past 4 games while Kuznetsov has been there): 11:46

No wait, it's even dumber. I figured it was true cause Staal probably still plays special teams while Kuznetsov doesn't but no .... it's just plain flat out wrong.

Kuz's ice time per game: 15:35
Staal's: 14:44

Lower tax rate in Carolina than Pittsburgh, plus Carolina's contention window is wider

The Leafs aren't trading Liljegren + two of their limited draft picks for a 35 year old Staal with 3 years left on his contract. At the moment, Liljegren is the only RD Toronto has for next season, highly unlikely they trade him at all let alone for another forward
