Pens want more for Guentzel. Add in Hoglander and Lekkerimaki. The Pens also have no interest in Mikheyev.

Name a better player traded at the deadline in the last 20 years. We've gone over this many times. I doubt there are many if any.

Sure from Columbus. Maybe Podz helps Cleveland win a Calder Cup.

Stone and Staal come to mind. They didn't get a 1st 2nd a teams top prospect and one of their best young roster players. No way Canucks would ever do that.

He's not from Siberia, tho, so he doesn't fit in with the others. I'd be concerned. wink

So let's look at their stats the year before they were traded:

    Stone:
    Xgoals per 60: 0.87
    Goals per 60: 1.00
    Points per 60: 3.10
    Corsi: 55%
    Xgoals against per 60: 3.04
    Shooting Talent Above Average: 1.7%

    Staal:
    Xgoals per 60: 1.16
    Goals per 60: 0.92
    Points per 60: 1.30
    Corsi: 62%
    Xgoals against per 60: 2.41
    Shooting Talent Above Average: -1.7%

    Guentzel
    Xgoals per 60: 1.67
    Goals per 60: 1.26
    Points per 60: 2.99
    Corsi: 62%
    Xgoals against per 60: 2.99
    Shooting Talent Above Average: 15.7%

So Guentzel vs Stone, Stone is a better passer but a worse shooter and worse at controlling play

Guentzel vs Staal, Staal is better at defence but worse at scoring and shooting.

In both cases I would prefer Guentzel.

Also, keep in mind at the time of the trades, Stone wasn't then what he became. His best season before Vegas was 26 goals and he was a 0.8 PPG player. Staal was also on the downside of his career, not being a PPG player for 5 years prior to his trade. Guentzel is in the prime of his career and is the best of these three.

Seems like a huge step in terms of trade return from those. Even the Copp deal recently turned out to show why those deals aren't worth it. Guentzel walks and the future is obliterated. Eve. If he stays , it's a risk given his age and contract he'll demand. Just don't see it. His value is not a lottery pick, another first, a young roster player who is headed for 20+ EV goals averaging 11 mins ice time and a second and fourth to top it off. That's insanity.

I hear what you're saying but there are two factors here.

1.) The Canucks are on pace for 110 points after 83 last year. That's a difference of nearly 30 points. That kind of jump is insane. It means either A.) This is a lightning in a bottle season and Van should go ALL IN on this year or B.) This is who they truly are and they don't need a full cupboard of prospects.

2.) The Canucks have 3 top 60 prospects. Losing 1, a 1st, and a good young NHL player won't obliterate their future.
Their best player is 25 and has a good lot of players around him on top of a very good farm. A 1st, Hoglander and Lekkerimaki is a steep price but well worth a Stanley Cup.

Go for it while you have the chance, next year isn't a given.

Let me ask a question, if it guaranteed a Cup win, would you trade the above for Guentzel?

Well, ya. I mean a cup would be a reason to. But nobody can guarantee that.

You are right, the breakout this season was unexpected. I'm not sold this is truly who they are but could be in a year or two. Joshua, Blueger, Lafferty are putting up career years. That wasn't expected production and has been a big difference.

Maybe they should ride the hot hand but after the Lindholm trade, they need to sort out the top 6 before adding another player. He hasn't even integrated in a meaningful way yet.

A big concern is the cap. They need Lekkerimaki to step to join the team with all these big contracts due.

What will be ironic after this, is if Vegas goes for Guentzel and ends up on Stone's line lol

I would agree but Van has Raty and Bains who are much closer and could play LW. With Garland and Boeser the top 6 right is covered. Lekkerimaki is also still in Sweden.

I'm a go for it kind of guy. If the Pens don't win another cup for 15 years, I'll still have 09, 16, and 17.

I also really like the Canucks and would like to see them win it once.

Forgot the fact that Stone was and still is a Selke contender along with providing valuable leadership, Stone is better, advanced stats don't tell you everything.

Stone xgoals against per 60 percentile year over year against forwards with 500+ min
    2023: 44th% (7th on VGK)
    2022: 87th% (4th on VGK)
2021: 48th% (9th on VGK) (Selke Nomine based on team)
2020: 85th% (1st on VGK) (Selke Nomine based on merit)
    2019: 26th% (11th on VGK)
2018: 34th% (11th on VGK) (Year he was traded)
    2017: 20th% (8th on Sens)
    2016: 93rd% (1st on Sens)
    2015: 25th% (7th on Sens)
    2014: 46th% (12th on Sens)

Bases on these numbers, he has his years of being really good but also has years of being just ok and some years of being fairly bad on defense. I have the feeling he is getting nominations based on name and not merit.

But, I will ask, do you have stats to refute mine?

Also, is Guentzel not a leader?

Edit: Also (total side note), great username!
