Habs want more if they have to retain on Allen and eat Johansens deal. Habs got a 1st for Monahan and gave up nothing for it. Id want a 1st or a least another 2nd

AZ is not giving 2 decent middle 6 vets (under contract for another year) for a low prospect and late 1st (when have a million 2nds) and using all their retention slots for this and next year

Kerfoot is a lot closer to a 2c than Bjustad imo but neither are anything special and I wouldn’t be super thrilled giving up a 1st for them. Which got me to thinking about Ben Meyers in comparison to Kerfoot, and how differently they allowed each to play.

Habs have 4 centers already. Dvorak will return. Johansen stinks. and is paid 4m. Thats a 1st rounder dump. Allen retained is at least a 3rd

Would recommend looking at what this does to the cap next year. they cannot take all 3 of those guys into next year.

If they trade Manson in the offseason and sign a 2-3M replacement in free agency then they can

I'd rather keep Manson at that point and flip one of the Cs tbh

I actually think that's an OK deal though. A first for 2 guys who are decent and solve your C depth problems AND are about 50% retained? Not bad. I also think it's better than paying a first for Henrique

Assuming you mean Kerfoot I could get on board with that but it would mean they would likely have to run a 21 man roster to make it work. Moving Kerfoot at 1.75 and replacing him with a league minimum deal would save roughly 1M, while moving Manson at 4.5M and replacing him with a 2-3M contract would save 1.5-2.5M, allowing them to use a 22 or 23 man roster

If you mean Colton I would disagree. I would much rather keep Colton than Manson

I understand the perspective, but Allen's value has completely tanked. We gain here simply by ending the 3-goalie rotation and getting Primeau some more playing time.
Even as a healthy scratch carrying an extra forward makes more sense than an extra goaltender.

Best case we play Ryjo and he gains value as trade bait next season (more than what we would receive for Allen).

I like this deal if I’m the Habs. Get a 2nd rounder for increasing the cap by $2M and Habs have a ton of cap space. It only leaves 1 retain spot 2024-2025 but the increase in a trade value by retaining 50% of a Dvorak, Armia, RyJo isn’t that much anyway, so by getting a 2nd now, you lock in that value right away.

Johansen will be on an expiring contract so he may be motivated and elevate his game. Not very likely but it’s not like Allen will elevate his game next year, so this is a good trade for the Habs.

Oh ofc no. We keep Colton for good. He'll be a fine 2C someday. I meant either one of the Arizona guys. Looking at the cap, probably Kerfoot.

And if it did come down to trading a D, I'd actually sooner trade Girard than Manson. I'm not one of those fans that hates him. Just think it'd be better that way.

Yeah not thrilled with the idea of a 1st for Henrique, ANA fans thinking Monahan is the comp seem to forget his cap number is over $5M and teams just don’t have the space to do it.

Manson has a MNTC, he won't be that easy to move, and i dont think the Avs want to.

its a 12 team no trade list. Im sure at least a couple of the other 20 teams will want to add a big veteran RHD with cup experience

If the Avs dont want to move Manson they could keep him and flip Kerfoot instead as @HockeyManiac95 suggested, then run a 21 man roster

Yeah, I can think of a team that wants a big veteran RHD with cup experience (Colorado). Why sell something more valuable than the centers that we are trading for?

If the Avs ran a 21 man roster, they'd actually be running an 19 man roster. Ambulanche and all that.

I like the idea of either Arizona Center but not both. This is spending a first to be forced to offload either a top 4 defenseman (not ideal) or sell one of the two centers you picked up (not ideal). The returns will not be good.

It all depends on which UFAs you can attract. If they can get a good deal on a D man for 2-3M then it makes sense to move Manson. If they can get a good deal on a C then it would make sense to flip Kerfoot. If they can get a good deal on a G then it would make sense to either flip Allen or maybe trade for a different goalie entirely

The Avs upcoming cap crunch is not exclusive to this trade idea. They will have to sacrifice depth at either C, D, or G next season regardless (unless they find great value UFAs or pay for retention). Even if they have to flip one of their acquisitions in the offseason they still got a playoff run out of them so its not like its just wasted assets. Id rather pay to fill all of the Avs holes and have a better chance at another cup this season than not add someone and leave a hole in the lineup just because we would get less value in a trade to flip them after the playoff run - maybe its not ideal to have to flip them but its also not ideal to only trade for one C and have to play Olofsson as a 4C for a playoff run
