Not at all the case this year. He has been a very serviceable 3RD and valuable leader. Not worth his $4M on the contract, but $8M over 2 years for a respectable 3rd liner vs $15M over 3 years for an AHL goalie is drastically different.

CBJ decline, unless we're sending you Elvis there's no way we take back Campbell. We're not about to lock up $10M+ for 3 years on a goalie tandem, and that's not a high enough return to buy out Campbell for you in the offseason. I don't think there's a Campbell trade scenario that makes more sense for EDM than buying him out in the offseason.



One gets paid $4M to be an ok 3rd pair guy and a leader. The other gets paid nearly $4M to stay as far away from the team as his contract allows, and the term is one year longer. That's not the same thing. The difference between "slightly above replacement level and overpaid" and "very expensive and totally unusable" is a chasm.

Rust isn't waiving for Edmonton or Canada, I can guarantee you he'd only waive to come home to Detroit. It was basically down to Detroit and Pittsburgh and he chose to re-sign with the latter.
