It's obvious, Fitzgerald wants retention on Markstrom, And Conroy won't retain on him.

There you go.
If I was GM of NJ, I would acquire a young goalie in his mid-20s.

Fitzy should at least go after Juuse Saros, Not a 34 year old Jacob Markstrom.

If Nashville is willing to retain Saros's contract, then I can imagine the NJ-NSH trade happening either Trade Deadline, Draft Day, or July 1.

I think Barry Trotz would for the right price.

Devils asked for retention and to which Conroy asked for Nemec and it cratered from there probably

They did, Vitek Vanecek and how’d that work out for them!?

Obviously being 34 hasn’t affected Markstrom’s game. He’s playing amazing right now

The attitude on this site is that any player over 32 should be taken out to pasture with a shotgun and left there

The reports have been a little murky, especially on timing.

But I have seen a couple of places it included Holtz.

Either Holtz for Markstrom retained…or Holtz+Vanecek for Markstrom.

Instead of trading for Markstrom....knowing that it won't make any difference this season, the Devils keep their young assets and sign a UFA this summer

Have to imagine at least a 2nd would have to be added to dump Vanecek in the deal and that CGY isn’t interested in retaining

Flames don’t want or need Vanecek, but should take him to get a 2nd + Holtz and avoid retention. Hopefully Vanecek improves and we can flip him in the off-season or next season

Sounds like it’s a dead deal anyways, so it’d be an off-season move now or just do like @palhal says above

We played Brodeur until he was 41. We signed Crawford at 35. We started Daws at age 20. I don’t think age is an issue for this organization. But we have other mouths to feed.

There you go, you helped make my point and that’s why I’m assuming CGY takes Vanecek back, so it’s just $2.6mil they’re adding and not the full $6mil

Have not seen anywhere that any picks included. It was either Holtz+Vanecek or Holtz with Marky retained.

(But I am in the camp that doesn’t really buy the story)

Here's what our local Flames insider had to say about the trade:

Quote:
It was a Roster Player, 1st Rounder (Unsure if it’s 24 or 25), Prospect and additional 2nd for Retention.

Apparently, the deal fell through after Conroy contacted LAK, and CAR before finalizing the deal. Retention wasn't an issue.

Maybe it was a 1st + Vanecek + Holtz + 2nd FOR Markstrom 15-25% Retained

Who said that? Sound more like a Hanifin price.

It would mean two things

1. This story is all bunk…because those are very different facts than what has been reported thus far from national and NJ reporters

2. It should be a fairly major concern to Flames fans. If Conroy accepts an offer from one team, asks player to waive, then goes to other teams for better price….he is going to have very hard time getting other GMs to deal with him. It’s a major no no. And will have harder time recruiting free agents.

If Markstrom doesn’t end up getting traded it would be a disaster for Conroy. Markstroms value will only go fown

Just a guy that had insider tidbits throughout the years on a Flames forum. If you want to believe it's all BS, be my guest.

It's not a concern, because the deal wasn't finalized. I think Conroy will do just fine, if Fitz wants to throw a fit over it well then that's his choice.

Quote:
Flames had a deal in principle with NJD.

Conroy wanted to give courtesy to the other teams to match/improve their offers and NJD Fitz threw a fit, I believe both Carolina and LA were contacted.

Same #### happened when conroy and Vancouver made the deal with lindholm. Just Pat didn’t get pissy.
