Chatfield is statistically better, as well as cheaper, the pick is for the age difference as it gives Carolina a long-term Pesce replacement, and the pick would allow Toronto to grab Tanev

The only way Chatfield won't be on the team is because he walks as a UFA.

You seriously shouldn't be selling off Martin when he's the only backup right now. ESPECIALLY after Raanta injured himself (again).

Upgrading the third D pair just doesn’t seem like a worthwhile move. Maybe if you think Lily could be a Pesce replacement after this season. I do like the sharks trade though, maybe downgrade one of the picks a round but otherwise I like it.

Raanta is probably done. Can’t see him being an option in the playoffs this season

Considering he's only out a "couple of weeks" and the playoffs are a "couple of months" away, Raanta certainly be back.

The idea was to have Lily be a top 4 option after the year while significantly upgrading the bottom pairing. Toronto gets a better defender now, or at least one with inflated analytics because of Orlov, and a pick to go get Tanev, the Canes get a younger guy to fill the void long term.

Chatfield is at best even with Liljegren - but certainly not better. Chatfield plays in a much favourable coaching system that inflates his stats. He’s a 3rd pair defenceman with no growth left to his game - he is what he is at this point. Liljegren hasn’t been great but arguably still has some development left in him. Could see him turn into a reliable #4 option and when he’s likely moved it won’t be for a lateral movement. Not to mention that Liljegren plays 4 mins more a night.

This just isn’t a good deal for Toronto. If you wanna move Chatfield, hey we’ll give you a 4th. But bottom pair defenceman don’t go for that much value and Toronto certainly isn’t in any position to be overpaying for a depth player.

So glad you said bottom pairing defensemen don't go for that much value. I can lower the pick involved since that is what Lily is. He'll be 25 in 2 months, so he's, what, 4 years younger than Chatfield? It's not this chasm where it's a decade plus, and Lily is meh piece on one of the most volatile bluelines in the league. The idea, again, was to provide Toronto with the pick that would allow them to grab Tanev, I don't care what you do with Chatfield. Some Canes fans will try to argue he's a top 4 defensemen, but I honestly don't care.

The theory that Chatfield’s analytics are only good because of Orlov makes zero sense. He was very good last season with Calvin De Haan and Shayne Gostisbehere, too

He was replacement level last year, they've gotten better this year, and you can completely attribute that to Orlov

I wonder why. Not like he plays almost 5 minutes less TOI than Lily. Also, Lilly's metrics are pretty good this season lol.

Not trading our 24 year old for a career 6/7D and a 2nd does nothing for us

Why would Toronto do that? If they’re gonna move Liljegren for a 2nd like you’ve said, why not just move Liljegren for Tanev and scrap Carolina’s trade all together? Makes literally no sense.

Try not to be so bias and just see it’s not a good trade for anyone but Carolina.

Sharks accept and whole fan base roots for a Canes cup run lol.

Barabonov might be the highlight, I think he’d thrive in playoffs

They get Chatfield too, which is a major upgrade from Simon Benoit on the defensive core. That's why they make the move with Lily. Try not to be so bias and understand the logic for the entire deal here

lol. Chatfield isn’t a major upgrade on Benoit. All you’re doing now is throwing **** at the wall and hoping it sticks, first you’re calling Chatfield an upgrade on Liljegren and now Benoit.. next you’ll be saying he’s Toronto’s best defenceman. Benoit has been of of the league best shot suppressors this season and has seen his minutes begin to increase pretty drastically lately. He even plays more minutes than Chatfield already.

Give it a rest kid. This is a garbage idea.

No, Tanev is an upgrade on Lily, Chatfield is an upgrade on Benoit. I don't like Chatfield, but his speed alone makes him better than Benoit. Stop it.
"Benoit has been of of the league best shot suppressors this season" now whose throwing sh*t at the wall and hoping it sticks? Chatfield and Orlov as a pairing are literally the best in the league at shot suppression.

Give it a rest boomer, this package is a lot fairer than you'd admit

lol. Tanev isn’t involved in this deal. You can’t guarantee that making this trade gets Toronto Tanev - in fact it doesn’t. Right now the ask is a 1st round pick so not sure how a 2nd helps that lmao.

Benoit has been one of the better offensive suppressors this season - look at that stats. It’s not throwing anything at the wall when there’s stats to back it up.

You’re a bias user. Always have been. It’s a garbage offer. Keep your useless pick and bottom pair defender, Toronto doesn’t want or need either one of them, especially for a 24 year old right handed shot defender. Get real kid.
