Why would the Leafs trade a good young NHLer on his ELC for 2 guys I've never heard of and 2 draft picks (which aren't useful in win-now mode)?

Boldy would be one of the guys I'd be trying to get. Necas and Lundell are also some targets, just prefer Boldy much more than Zegras.

They don't fit your criteria, but I'd rather go after Dawson Mercer in NJD or Kent Johnson in CBJ. (they could realistically be available)

Knies will be a good player, no doubt. But his offensive upside was overhyped imo. If we are comparing him to past big winger Leafs, I think he'll be closer to a Mikheyev than a Hyman.

Personally, I don't think the Leafs will trade Knies. The reasons for that are that Knies has played minutes in the top 6 at times this season, he's under team control for the foreseeable future (he's a pending RFA after next season) and he's cheap, which is important since the Leafs are right up against the cap. You're welcome to make a ACGM for Knies if you want, but I just don't think it would be realistic. Let me know if you think I'm missing something here.

Never said he was. but that he could realistically be available. Heck, I think it was with you even a while back where we discussed that Mercer could be traded if the right trade came about.

The only piece he could be realistically be made available for is a young, elite, cost controlled goalie. The only teams with one of those are Boston and Dallas.

Theres just no package the habs could make, unless they want to go Guhle+++, but even then I’d rather keep Mercer

the "+++" is very debatable, and from my end I'd rather keep Guhle (and he's definitely not available). But from a positional point of view, and without having to argue about value, a deal centered around those two is at the very least "realistic".

lot of factors would need to come into play. Who's calling for who (it makes a difference if it's MTL calling for Mercer vs if NJD is calling for Guhle)? Are other key assets in play (is someone trying to move up or down in the draft perhaps)? Does it happen at the draft, or after free agency (where perhaps NJD spend on an elite player...let's say Stamkos, and are now against the cap)? Lots of those things would have an impact on this hypothetical deal.

NJD isn’t calling anyone with Mercer on the table. Wasn’t on the table for Meier.

And you have very clearly outlined that it would be MTL calling about Mercer.

If the devils want to save money they’ll sign him to a bridge, not trade Mercer.
