Martin St. Louis from Tampa on an expiring contract
Great comparison. Let's look at their stats:
All stats averaged over a 3 year span. I kept Guentzel on a linear track for this season and I assumed a linear track for Marty in the shortened 2013 season.
Player A:
Xgoals: 41.1
Goals: 37.7
Points: 81.7
Corsi: 60%
Shooting Talent Above Average: 18.0%
Player B:
Xgoals: 23.3
Goals: 28.0
Points: 81.7
Corsi: 53.3%
Shooting Talent Above Average: 4.5%
Now player B has slightly better defensive stats and player A has slightly better physical stats.
Player A is clearly superior in shooting, scoring, and controlling play while also having the same (weird) number of points. A is Guentzel.
That is a fine comparison but St. Louis comes up a bit short (no pun intended).
St. Louis and a 2nd went for a 28yo Ryan Callahan (56 Goals and 110 Points in his last 166 games and was a gritty glue guy), and 2 1sts.
That is more than a low 1st and a B prospect. I would ask for much more as Guentzel is clearly the better player.
