Probably not. Monahan is the highest scoring pending ufa centre and is at a cap hit teams with limited space can afford. They wont have any trouble

Yup totally, just like we were with Chairot, Lehkonen, Petry and Toffoli. We called their value almost to a tee and everyone here said the same thing about those guys. Seems like you all never learn your lesson!

There’s plenty of other center that could be had but just need retention lol (Henrique, T Johnson, Wennberg, etc.)

I don’t know what comparison you guys are using in which you definitely think you’ll get a 1st++

Henrique double retained 1.45 million vs 500k for monahan

Tyler johnson has 13 points and hasnt been a full time centre since 2018. Ideal 4th liner at this point.

Wennberg has 18 points and is dog**** in the faceoff dot. He isnt capable of filling in as a 2c. Also more than twice the cap hit.

Henrique double retained is low enough for the rangers and if cheaper, probably worth it more

Tyler Johnson is still probably better than Bonino/Goodrow/Brodzinski who they’re currently using

The point being is the rangers aren’t gonna hugely overpay for a 3C because they’re not gonna light up the scoresheet

Monahan scores half his points on the powerplay and is a defensive pylon. He’s not a 2c either

A late first round isn’t a massive haul. If the Rangers think they are a true contender, Monahan hold so much more value then a first round pick for the rangers. That first round pick in the beat case scenario will help them in 3 years. Each year it’s the same old story, why people doesn’t understand. Monahan definitely is worthy at this point of a late first round pick. Kevin Hayes once landed a first round pick so don’t gave me the useless bull**** that he is better then Monahan because that is total crap. There a team that will look at Monahan as a missing depth pieces and they will be willing to sacrifice a 20th-32th pick in the draft that might not be anything after all since the % of players that play a 100 games in the NHl is under 20% if i am not mistaken, to get immediate help.

So what, Monahan won’t be surrounded by Ahl wingers who make is number drastically drop. Monahan will be acquired as a depth pieces who can play anywhere in the line up. that what recent cup champion had acquired on the deadline, depth pieces. If you trade for Monahan and think he’ll be the Conn Smythe winner then your team might not be as good as you think. Monahan on a good team will be a excellent third line center who can play 2nd powerplay and kill penalty take huge faceoff. Can wait to see him getting traded so all this community here can eat there words. It will be so satisfying.

He can’t kill penalties if he sucks defensively, which he does.

You’re branding him as a depth center who can win draws, that’s not worth a 1st+

I mean he has horrible analytics playing in sheltered 5v5 minutes on the Habs team. Every single playoff team should be proceeding with caution and using the conditional 2nd on him

It's a possibility, but there are a lot of positive indicators towards him getting at least a 1st.
The rental market for centers isn't great this year.
You basically have Monahan and (maybe) Novak as the top choices for the majority of teams, simply because they are capped out.
Everyone else requires more significant retention, additional cap moves, have (unwanted) term, and/or are at least a tier lower.

There's nothing really wrong with your proposal other than it leaves room for other teams to match/beat it. Conditions or a weak prospect will be tabled for at least a time before being accepted.

I'm guessing the trade will happen early.
Hughes isn't hard set on maximizing value and has a handshake agreement to send Monahan somewhere desirable. He's not going to go back and forth and squeeze a team up until the final minutes.
The first team to step up with a strong offer has the best chance of getting him. If you come in with no conditions and NYR is a team Monahan would appreciate being sent to, you could very well get him for less.
The price for NYR might be only an unconditional 1st. If you meet the minimum threshold Hughes has set (whatever that may be), you may end up getting him cheaper than the market might dictate, since you would be able to avoid a bidding war.
