There’s a VAST difference in values between graves and Pettersson, they are definitely not trading him unless they suck at next years deadline

True, but Viteck (with 50% retention over 2 years) I’d say trade value wise is equal to a guy who was recently on waivers (with 50% retention exp this year) and Comrie who has seen basically no games and has played almost equally as bad

I mean graves has played very well for NJD before, whereas Viteck is purely a cap dump

Well, i can certainly say the Sabres wouldn’t want him right now at ANY Cap hit
And comparing him to a goalie we sent to the AHL has no bearing at all on who we might bring in going forward

If NJD wanted graves at 4.5 million x 6 they’d have signed graves at 4.5 million x 6.

So even just starting there he’s a cap dump in the eyes of NJD.

And now he’s disappointed in Pittsburgh, so his value has dropped more.

So like I said. Vanacek for Graves 1 for 1.

You take a cap dump and hope Vanacek can find his old game.

We take cap dump with much bigger, long term risk in hopes that we can rehabilitate Graves.

Either that or graves+2nd for future considerations

I think the only trade that anyone likes is that that the Pens would be ok with the Theodore deal. No one else is really getting anything they want or need.

From NJ, the Pens get another set of interchangable depth guys with questionable ability to stay on an NHL roster and on overpaid goalie they don't need. The Devils get 5 more full years of a guy that just left as a UFA and probably gets in the way of giving ice time to Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec.

The Buffalo deal is honestly just another hoop to jump through to make the other deals work. No need to do it if the others don't work. We don't need to play 4D chess here.

As for the Montreal deal, that's just us throwing quantity at them for guys that aren't really all that interesting. Monahan's offense would be a welcome addition to the bottom 6, but his defense has been so lackluster this season that I don't think replacing Eller with him is necessarily an improvement. And no contender is going to have Jake Evans on their 3rd line. I'd rather give his spot to Poulin and see if he finally sticks in the NHL like Puustinen has.

Shea Theodore is currently injured, but he has 18 points in 20 games, was their best defensemen during their cup run, and QBs their power play. Giving them an original misfit back and our top D prospect isn't going to make them better right now. Why should Vegas even consider that?

A reclamation project does not equal a cap dump, I’d be willing to give up more on PITs side but Graves for Viteck does absolutely nothing for them…there’s no reason to give up on graves this early when your not getting anything of interest back, plus he’s just proven to not play well paired with talented offensive defensemen…he does better when he’s with other 2 ways like Marino

Graves is a cap dump from NJD's perspective.

They did not think he was worth 4.5 million when they let him go, and since then he has only lowered his stock.

I'd imagine the valuation in NJD was probably around 4 mill before, and has dropped since to about 3.7 mill on Graves. Or worth -4.8 million over the remaining life of his contract.

Again, if you want to send him back to NJD, either take back Vanacek or pay us a 2nd.

The trade value is fine, the logic isn't there. VV isn't beating out UPL or Levi
