Description
I think each team ends up with what they want. I’m sure there are plenty of reasons why this wouldn’t work, but as I see it for all three teams, there is a net benefit.

- NJ gets a goaltender who has put up the best stats over the past 1.5 years of any goaltender in the league locked into a good contract. They also get rid of some of the inefficiency with Vanacek

- Boston secures the hometown D and a good 2C. More predictability for their offseason. It costs them Ullmark, Lohrei, and a first plus a well like D in Grz, but get other positives in return.

- Calgary: Two #1’s, a very good offensive D in Lohrei with control, and they use only one retention slot. I think they could try to separate them, but both are likely rentals and the secondary assets you’d be getting don’t have nearly the upside of Lohrei if you actually watch him play. Grz with a retention slot gives you some value OR you could try to keep him.

I'd say yes to that if I'm NJ.

Ullmark, Lohrei, Griz, 1st for Hanafin, Lindholm, Vanecek unsure

If BOS is giving up all that, they gotta resign Hanafin 100% (with Lohrei gone) and likely Lindholm

Everyone gets what they want/need, IMO thats a good trade for NJD to get rid of Vanecek and upgrade to Ullmark, and although CGY is giving up a top 2C and a top 4D, they're getting quite the haul in return

Gotta admit tho, that lineup is looking much more well-rounded from top to bottom (minus goaltending) although Vanecek would be a very servicable backup

It’s a monster deal. I kept on reading other trade options and just kind of landed here.

Every team could probably go I don’t want to because of one reason or try to optimize, but the construct is pretty interesting for all. Maybe not the optimal scenario for all, but a landing point that makes every one better long term considering who can resign these players

My assumption is Boston signs both Hanifin and Lindholm.

Going multiple years without a first and a second is painful. While my general assumption is you’ll be lucky to secure a better than 3rd line forward or dman from that group, you generally secure one in a 3 year period from those 6 picks and that player is generally worth a lot in the ELC timeframe

I don’t think NJD would be retaining on vanacek in this deal.

We’ll retain 50% of lindholm for you tho if you drop the 3rd

But I’d rather have vitek as an insurance option at 3.4 (and only 2.35 buried, then guaranteed retaining 1.7.)

1st+we retain 50% on Lindholm for Ullmark

Boston gets:
50% retained Lindholm
50% Hanifin
Gives:
Ullmark
1st
3rd
Lohrei

NJD gets:
Ullmark
Gives:
1st
50% retention on Lindholm

Calgary gets:
1st
1st
3rd
Lohrei
Gives:
Hanifin 50% retained
Lindholm

Calgary gets the same assets-Gryz which has no value to them really

Boston can keep Gryz as depth (or ship him off or even include him here if they want to use the money elsewhere), because they're saving 3 mill with retention on Lindholm and Bussi vs Vanacek

NJD saves a 3rd and keeps an insurance option in net

The irony is the deal discussion turns to the marginal goalie, workmanlike defenseman, and least valuable pick. Cap Friendly can be fascinating some times.

I also don’t believe NJ or Boston would say no if someone took a hardline position either way. Frankly, it’s talking about margins to tweak rather than the crux of the deal.

I hope this doesn’t come across as criticism. It just made me laugh a bit

The conversation being around the secondary pieces means you made a quality, overall well thought out proposal. Props to you

Calgary isn’t getting better value than 2 number 1s and a prospect like Lohrei. Sorry. Rentals don’t get that. A 2nd and 3rd isn’t going to provide a player this close with that upside. Curious to see how it plays out, but I think Calgary fans are going to be disappointed

I look at two comparables for each.

For lindholm:
Giroux for tippett + 1st
Horvat for 1st + raty + Beau

Hanifin:
H lindholm deal
Seth jones deal.

So lohrei + 1st for lindy is fair.
Then 1st + x2nds(or comparable prospect) for hanifin.

So remove the 3rd and add x2 2nds and the deals good.

You aren’t contemplating cap adjustments in the deals or in the case of Horvat/Lindholm, the fact that one was having a career year and the other one of their worst,

Also devils decline now. Not buying a goalie with Siegs and Hamilton out. Need 1, maybe 2 dman or to just sell and punt to next year

I don’t understand why you would go all in this year. I’d be trying to see if one of your young goalies is the answer with Schmid having the most potential.

Even though Boston is in first place in the Atlantic, I kind of see them in the same light

With Siegs and dougie out long term, Jack potentially out long term, and Palat and Meier out right now, this is a selling season.

A score of 3 rookies miller and smith isn’t gonna cut it, especially with our goalies
