How much does Monahan cost

Description
I know Montreal fans will think I'm undervaluing Monahan, but can a guy who was dumped a year ago and is only scoring at roughly a 0.5 ppg pace really worth more than 2 2nds a B level prospect?

For reference here are some comparable centers traded at the deadline:

Derrick Brassard (age 33) was above 0.5 ppg and had good faceoff numbers, really cheap contract and had 50% salary retained, but was only worth a 4th round pick

Marcus Johansson (age 30) was just a hair under 0.5 ppg and can play all 3 forward positions, was on a 1.5 million dollar contract and had 50% retained and was only worth a 4th and a 6th

Jeff Carter (age 35) was at 0.5 ppg when he was traded from LA to Pittsburg with 50% retention and was only worth a 3rd and a 4th.

Tyler Ennis (age 30) was above 0.5 ppg with 14 goals and was on an 800k contract and was traded for only a 5th rounder

Now Monahan is better than all those players, but I think his value is less than other big name centers who were moved at the deadline like O'Reilly, Copp, and Statsny in 2018

What about 2 2nds and a prospect? I changed the trade. Beau Akey is one of Edmontons few RHD prospects so they likely won't make him available

Sean Monahan 2024 (between $1-2M) plays 18 minutes/game, projected 20G 48P, win 57.5% of faceoffs

Comparables:

- Andrew Copp 2022 ($2,3M) plays 18 minutes/game, 21G 53P, win 53% of faceoffs : 1st (conditional to 2 rounds won), 2nd,5th + Morgan Barron

- JG Pageau 2021 ($3,1M) plays 19 minutes/game, 26G 42P, win 56.5% of faceoffs : 1st, 3rd (+ conditional 2nd if NYI won the cup)

When habs fans say a conditional 1st (let say 50% of playoffs games played) +3rd , they give an educated opinion.

That's a fair point! I'd counter with the fact that both those players might have a reputation for being better defensively and better penalty killers than Monahan. I do think Monahan's value could be lessened by the fact that he was dumped a year ago, but you may be right and Montreal won't let him go for less than a first!

As it says in the post, Montreal isn't the team retaining on him. I just wonder how well he fits in with the future of the team in Montreal, you guys have so many up and coming centers!

True. Monahan still has a decent defensive game and has more skill to enhance a powerplay, unlike the other 2 (might not be as usefull for EDM, but for other contenders yes).

There's never two players identical, but I believe similar position, caphit, TOI, goals, points, and FO% is close enough.

I think its important to remember the price at the tdl are usually the highest they are at any point.

Mccabe and lafferty last year gpt a 1st and 2nd.

Bertuzzi in a sub .5 ppg season got a 1st

Tanner jeannot got a full draft class

Meier got multiple 1sts and 2nds in picks and prospects with no extension.

Oreilly (sub .5 ppg) and acciari got a 1st 2nd 3rd

Theres plenty of guys who may not seem "worth" their return but the situation makes it.

i would definitly do it. i think we will fall a little bit short of a first, mostly for the same reasons you mentioned (defensive game, not really physical). I would do that trade for sure.

What about 2 seconds with one of them turning into a 1st if the Oilers make it to the conference finals if the Oilers make it to the conference finals?

I totally see where you're coming from asking for a 1st rounder, but there should be a lot of centers availabe this deadline: Jason Dickinson (12 g 18 pts), Henrique (10 g 19 pts), Jack Roslovic (0.5 ppg), and potentially Lindholm (8g 25 pts), Wennberg (5g 15 pts), and Pinto just to name a few.

If all you could get was a 2nd that could turn into a 1st based on conditions, would that not be enough to make Montreal bite on a player they were paid to acquire?

Something like Lavoie and a 2nd might work, but it's hard to say how high teams are willing to go this year because so many went hard last year.
A 1st is more likely to get it done, but there might be multiple offers of a 2nd + prospect to choose from instead, then it comes down to who Montreal wants.

It may be worth it for Edmonton to offer a 1st(+) simply because he's the best value in performance vs cap at the TDL and they can avoid the higher cost of dumping Campbell for at least this year while still adding at the deadline.
They should also be highly interested in Kovacevic should he be available, for much the same reason.

Edmonton needs to get value wherever they can to shore up their roster for serious runs and that's going to mean paying a price. Tampa never bulked at paying high prices to do what was necessary and that's the kind of approach you need through a stagnant cap period.

There is no future for Edmonton. McDavid is it. Nothing matters beyond getting a cup while they have him.
They have to make the right moves, but they have to be aggressively pursuing that goal every year.

Fair enough, I'd counter with all the guys who statistically should have been worth much more, but got an underwhelming return at the deadline.

Now Monahan is arguably better than all those players, but to be fair most of the players you listed are much younger and better than Monahan. I think he's somewhere in the middle, worth probably a 2nd and a prospect

How many of those can you fit under the cap? I'm asking because contenders trading for other players will need to pay for salary retention, and usually have very little cap space (BOS, TB, TOR, and of course EDM). Monahan for 500k (retained 50% for half a season) is quite a deal and will come with a premium IMO.

I get that, here are some cheaper centers that were traded at the deadline with similar ppg to Monahan this season:

Derrick Brassard (age 33) was above 0.5 ppg and had good faceoff numbers, really cheap contract and had 50% salary retained, but was only worth a 4th round pick
Marcus Johansson (age 30) was just a hair under 0.5 ppg and can play all 3 forward positions, was on a 1.5 million dollar contract and had 50% retained and was only worth a 4th and a 6th

Not saying that Monahan isn't worth significantly more than those guys, he is, I just don't think he'll be worth what Copp, Pageau, and O'Reilly were worth

Brassard was 34 years old and everyone knew he wasnt that player. He had 5 of his 16 points in the first 3 games so he had gone 11 points in 28 games the rest of the way.

Marcus johansen at the point he was traded to washington had not taken 1500 faceoffs total in the 10 years including the trade year. For reference sean monahans 82 game average is 1336 faceoffs. That is not remotely a centre thats a winger who is the secondary on faceoffs (its less than 3 per game)

Jeff carter again was 35 is had multiple unproductive seasons.

Tyler ennis was a undersized winger who again wasnt productive before the spurt right before the trade.

A general reminder sean monahan over the last 10 years has been below a .5 ppg once. He has been a ppg player and has more seasons on a 55+ point pace than ones he wasnt.

This isnt a cherrypicked oh he happened to be this guy for 20 games to inflate stats. He has been a 2nd line centre or better for the vast majority of the last decade and is still one today.

Oilers don’t want Monahan. He’s a piece of **** that tried to sucker punch and concuss Nuge. Why the **** would we reward him with a chance on a contender.

He also doesn’t even fit the build of the team. He does literally one thing and one thing only, score from 10 feet in. If he doesn’t do that, he does squat for any team, let alone a contender. Slow boots, slow motor, slow hustle, near zero vision, near zero grit. He’s useless player to the Oilers.

There’s a reason Sutter didn’t even think to play him even when healthy for the playoffs. There’s a reason Treliving literally PAID to get rid of him.
