The Flames get a legit #1 wing AND get out of the Huberdeau contract for the cost of a 1st. Seems more than fair to me.
Pens take a change that Huberdeau can get things figured out back in the East and at 50% off it helps them with the cap numbers for 7.5 more years (if it works out). They also get the 1st for the risk and can start the youth rebuild.

You'd be getting out of the worst contract in the leauge while getting a useful player back, flames would be a lot better than a bottom 8 team with Gentulz instead of Huby

why am I kinda good with this? Get Huberdeau back to the East for a potential career revival at 5.5mil, vs Jakes future extension which would be 8.5+++. Plus a pick that will help in the post-Sid era

LMAO did you even read what you just wrote before posting it? Guentzel is literally only a year and 4 months younger than Huberdeau who when we acquired him was a legit #1 wing, and a far better one than Guentzel too. On top of that Jake is probably going to be asking for an 8 year deal in the 10-12M range too, plus you want Calgary to retain 5M????? So if we want to keep Guentzel we would essentially be paying him close to 17M for 7 of the 8 years because newsflash, when you are retaining 5M for 7 years you aren't "getting out" of the contract.

Then on top of that it's not the "cost of a 1st," its the cost of Calgary's maybe most important pick over the next 5 years.

I'll tell you what. In the summer when Guentzel walks you can have Huberdeau with zero retention free of charge

5M retention for 7 years dude. Calgary would be better off letting Guentzel walk for nothing after this swap

Why, because Calgary will buy him out? No team is trading for Huberdeau without retention.
I was attempting to propose a trade where Calgary 'gets out of' the Huberdeau contract, receives a comparable if not better option in Jake at the cost of eating half of Huberdeau's salary and their 1st round pick.

PS: The term 'gets out of the Huberdeau contract' means in this case, not required to pay the man for 10.5M for the next 7.5 years (retention will be 5M for 7 years).

Why? What a weird way of looking at things. Let's assume Calgary is or would consider buying out Huberdeau. The cap hit for each of the seven years remaining would be *more* than what would be retained in the Penguins trade AND they would be taking a hit until after the 2038 season. This trade is an alternative solution to buying Huberdeau out and provides Calgary a way of 'saving' money vrs the buyout scenario as well as getting a top player back to play for this season and the rest of his career when they resign him (and yes it will be between 8-10M ~ because he is that freaking good).

Take a look at the buyout terms yourself:

Huberdeau is buyout proof. But you clearly don't understand how much we would be paying Huberdeau to not play for us. This is worse than when people thought San Jose would retain 50% on Karlsson. And you want Calgary to add a top 10 pick 🤣

If I do not understand, then explain it to me. The way I see it:
Year 1 of buyout: $7,904,762
Year 1 of trade proposed: 5M

Year 2 of buyout: $7,904,762
Year 2 of trade proposed: 5M

Year 3 of buyout: $10,404,762
Year 3 of trade proposed: 5M

Year 4 of buyout: $10,404,762
Year 4 of trade proposed: 5M

Year 5 of buyout: $7,904,762
Year 5 of trade proposed: 5M

year 6 of buyout: $10,404,762
year 6 of trade proposed: 5M

year 7 of buyout: $5,904,762
year 7 of trade proposed: 5M

year 8 of buyout: $904,762
year 8 of trade proposed: 0

year 9 of buyout: $904,762
year 9 of trade proposed: 0

year 10 of buyout: $904,762

year 11 of buyout: $904,762
year 11 of trade proposed: 0

year 12 of buyout: $904,762

year 13 of buyout: $904,762
year 13 of trade proposed: 0

year 14 of buyout: $904,762
year 14 of trade proposed: 0

The Karlsson trade is a good counter-point. The Karlsson trade was a 13% retention rate vrs the proposed 38% retention rate on Huberdeau *BUT* Karlsson was worth WAYYYYY more than Huberdeau is worth now. Karlsson had just scored 101 points. Not really comparable in my opinion.

Doubt if Guentzal has Flames on his trade list.
Pens should say no....Huberdeau isn't worth half his contract now, and it's not going to get better.
If they do trade Guentzel...,they get a return, and have 5.5m in cap next season instead of trading for Huberdeau, if they trade with another team.

You very clearly aren't getting it at all. I am not even debating the buyout because again his contract is buyout proof. He will not be bought out.

Karlsson was traded with 38 million in actual money still owed to him. San Jose retained 13% of that contract meaning that their owner will be paying him 4.94 million in actual money to not play for his team.

Huberdeau is still owed 73.5 million in actual money + 3.5M x the percentage of the year remaining (for arguments sake we'll call it 50% of the year so 1.75M). So a total of 75.25M in actual money. You are asking Calgary to retain 47.6% of his remaining contact (not sure how you got 38% for 5/10.5). Which means Calgary's owner would be paying Huberdeau 35.83 million to play for another team. Thats absurd

Hahaha! I thought you were a fan. Not part of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment ownership group. That makes sense.
To be concerned about the 'actual money' that the player is paid???

Who cares what the millionaires have to pay? I am talking about the cap hit. That is what fans care about. Why do you care what the millionaire ownership has to pay. It means nothing to us fans.

Weird argument!

Yea, that makes sense. The only real reason the Pens would consider this would be to potentially get a player who could return to the player he once was.

So the Flames will do what SJ did... Wait for Huberdeau to have a bounce back season and THEN trade him with a whole lot less retention for fewer years.

The best Calgary can do is try and find someone in trade, or free agency to play with Huberdeau and get him to the level he was at in Florida. If that can't happen, they're stuck with him for a couple more seasons at least, and then maybe they'll retain some salary and trade him for peanuts. It's hard to imagine they would want to have 5 mill on the books for 7 seasons.
