That's why I asked. :P

Edit: My description didn't save. I fixed it.

What is the price (from your perspective)?

First of all this may be a lot closer if you didn’t ask MTL to use their last retention spot.

I don’t think Hugues would be interested. We already have plenty of project in our farm system. A first round pick or a prospect that would upgrade a position. Yager would need to be that guy’s.

Im tired to tell PIT, EDM, VAN, TOR, BOS, COL, etc. fans that Monahan will be in high demand and cost a conditional 1st. And Poulin isnt one, he's a bust.

I appreciate the feedback. If the trade is a 1st+, or even a conditional 1st for a rental, I think the Pens would pass. They definitely shouldn't trade their best prospects for a rental. There are other options that would fill the same need and cost less.

Thank you all for the input.

I can’t imagine hes gonna fetch a first. His history of already dipping in production and the injury struggles is probably gonna turn a lot teams away. Habs already got a 1st for taking on his contract can’t imagine Hughes would be mad about taking a guy on for a first only for him to fetch a 2nd after he makes a bit of a comeback. Could see them doing a conditional 2nd with it going to a first if the team makes E/W CF. But i guess we will see.

I agree with you PIT shouldnt trade away high value futures for a rental, but your new GM 100% will. It's kind of his whole thing.

I can only see one instance of Dubas trading a 1st for a rental and that would be O'Reiley. In all fairness, he is a much better player than Monahan.

I suspect Monahan will go for a 2nd but I could be wrong.

GMs know that his extended period of injury was poorly managed decisions related to his hips. Last season with the foot was a combination of bad luck and a player downplaying an injury that wasn't bad, which made it worse.

I'd have no issue with trading Monahan for less, but there's no reason to when all indications and precedents point to him getting substantial interest and higher trade value.

At the deadline, the best offer wins. There's a fairly good chance that involves a 1st (or equivalent). Before the deadline, where he can help towards a playoff push and not simply be a playoff rental, it pretty much has to include a 1st.

If that turns someone off to a trade possibility, so be it. There's always plan B. If you're trading for him now, it's because he's THE guy for your GM. Tampa is the standard. They identify THE guy and do what it takes and it has worked for them.

I guess it’s possible, but of all the players being looked at for the TDL hes not one of the headliners and only so many firsts get given out. Time will tell, teams haven’t even really begun to separate themselves yet, the only teams i see as out of the hunt for the playoffs as it sits are Columbus, Chicago and San Jose, and if Calgarys in a playoff spot come TDL monahans value shoots up.

I think the biggest factor is that a lot of teams went hard last year. This deadline may end up being more conservative or a continuation of the madness. We won't know until we get there.

Just O'Reilly?!?

You forgot the famous Foligno trade... and Dubas paid 2x2nd for a 38 y.o. UFA Giordano (resigning him doesnt makes the trade better) .... and Lyubushkin for a 2nd... and Mccabe might not have been a rental, it was still overpaying with a 1st+2nd at the trade deadline...

Quite a track record of terrible pick spending at TDL here...

Yeah that’s true, I don’t see the dubas going hard this year, he has a much different situation in Pitt, that’s what brought me to monahan, since he’s not really the first name coming to mind when discussing trades this year, think the flames bunch have all that publicity lol. Also i think he’d be looking at someone to resign and I don’t see lindholm and guenzel being resigned unless someone was moved out. Time will tell so far as a pens fan been a mixed bag, but overall this year seems exciting with no clear cut playoff teams as of yet.

I did forget about Foligno. That would be a good comparison for Monahan. About the same salary and their numbers match fairly well.

I think that trade is seen as a disaster, so maybe Dubas learned a lesson? Time will tell.

As for the other trades, Giordano was still productive. He also wasn't traded for a 1st. The odds a late 1st will be an NHL regular is around 75%. The odds for a late 2nd is around 30%. So two 2nds are lower than one 1st.

Again, I did miss Foligno but you made it sound like Dubas tossed 1sts away like candy. It has happened twice for a rental and never for a rental who the previous year was dumped by their team by tossing in a 1st.

Monahan has value but if MTL wanted a 1st, I think teams will look elsewhere. Just my opinion.

In my opinion Monahan will fetch a 2nd rounder, becoming a 1st if the team reaches a certain round and Money plays 50% of the games. If he's healthy at the TDL of course.

Plenty of team would pay that for a responsable middle 6 center ripping it in the faceoffs circle and with PP habilities.

Fair enough. I don't totally disagree with you assessment. He is having a good season. Maybe a 3rd that turns into a 2nd if he plays X number of games and a 3rd that turns into a 2nd if the team reaches the conference finals. Then if both conditions are met, the two 2nds turn into a 1st.

At worst they get 2 3rds, at best they get a 1st. Just a thought.
