From what do you derive this judgement? Whether from my eye test, simple statistical measures, or more in-depth analysis, Girard is genuinely bad at defense and gets exploited for it regularly while playing an easier role than Nurse has.

As for Lindstrom, he'd be at best a marginal upgrade on Desharnais and, even then, I'm not certain.

I don’t agree. RNH at $5.125M is such a sweet deal. I don’t like the age and the term, but that would lock down 2C for the rest of the cup window. I think Edmonton declines that pretty easily.

I don’t agree on Girard. He’s just a different defenseman. Good at rush defense, but doesn’t play very physically and doesn’t clear the net front like the big body defensemen of the past. But he’s a solid defenseman. Not the answer to Edmonton’s problems, but still solid.

Basically, you’d be trading Girard (a solid player in a 3/4D role) for RNH (a high end 2C). Girard would need to be replaced by someone who would likely be a downgrade. I’d argue that RNH is a larger upgrade over Johansen than Girard would be over whoever we’d get in free agency. There’s still risk, but RNH is real good.

Why would you go get Girard knowing he isnt playing right now? He recently stepped out of the game for personal issues…
