Devils say no thanks

This deal is bad for both teams. Regardless of what impact it has on the ice, both team's identities are tied up in their respective 1st overall picks. McDavid and Edmonton are tied at the hip so it takes a massive overpay to pry him away. Same goes with Hughes in NJ. The Devils need to stay the course and win a Cup. I think they're closer than the Oilers to winning one.

Huge overpay. If this was basketball where one player (LeBron James) can make a difference then sure but this is hockey. Your best player only plays 33% of the game. It’s a true team sport and you’re sending Edmonton 5 first round picks and Jack Hughes is looking like an MVP so far this season. And he’s much younger.

I know McDavid is the best hockey player in the world but Jack Hughes is on a 200 point pace right now, he's been amazing for the Devils so it doesn't really feel like upgrading J. Hughes into McDavid costs them 2 future elite D's + 2 1sts

Jack Hughes is almost McDavid level and younger. So I really do not see why NJD would do that. And honestly look to add someone like McDavid at all.

Hughes is 22, leads the NHL in points right now, makes 8 mill for the next 7 years, compared to connor making 12.5 for the next 3 and then probably 16+ for the 4 after that if you can even resign him.

LOL, Edmonton absolutely makes this deal. McDavid is easily the best player in the world but Hughes is arguably in the conversation as a top 5 - 7 player himself, has an amazing contract at $8m per for seven more seasons and is younger. McDavid’s deal is substantially more at $12.5m or for three seasons.

Edmonton also receives one of the most highly thought of young d-man in the league in Luke Hughes, another solid d prospect in Nemec who could be another top pair guy and two first round picks.

This is a no brainer for the Oilers.

Based on age+ contract it probably wouldn't cost anything. Hughes and Mcdavid are the 2 most valuable assets in hockey

Last season yes. And Hughes had 99. And has 18 in 7 games so far... and he is younger. Longer term on contract etc...

And 123 the year before, and 105 the year before that in only 56 games. Hughes is NO where CLOSE to McDavid or even Draisaitl

Gretzky was traded by the same team and Edmonton won a cup a couple seasons later… he is in my opinion the greatest player of all time.

Hockey is a team game, more so than most, you win championships by building deep talented teams. With the salary cap that it is extremely difficult to do which is why J Hughes contract is so important in this deal. For the next three seasons you have a top young talent to replace McDavid making $4.5m less. For the four seasons after that the difference in their salaries will probably be close to $7m… that’s enough for another impactful player.

I don't think you can compare it that way. McDavid also costs 4 mil a year more. I rather have Hughes and have 4 mil to spend on improving forward depth, d-men or goalie position. Just to be clear I'm not saying Hughes is better than McDavid one for one. I'm saying Hughes is very very good for a reasonable price, which makes it easier to build a proper team around him.

Top 5 player 7x8m > Top 1 player 3x12.5m

He is good for a reasonable price yes but McD is underpaid too. He could be making 16M rn but he's not.

and locked at 8M for 6 more years beyond this one vs McDavid's 12.5M for 2 more years. So, anything more than Hughes + one prime asset like L Hughes or Nemec or two 1st round picks is definitely a massive overpay in my opinion. If Hughes finishes the year with 120+ points, you can probably argue that closer to a one for one is fair.

Yeah if to compare with Matthews, but he only cares about money. Either way, it is a bad trade for both teams for different reasons.
