He played well in the preseason after a bad first game, but looked utterly lost playing his opposite side which you can’t have with a 7th defenseman when you didn’t have an 8th. I think he’s worth a flyer if you want to pair him with a defensive first defenseman or are carrying two backup d.

Yeah, Mitchell looked good in his two pre-season with the Hawks too. Playing against lesser competition. He was pretty good in the AHL as well. But he was BAD in every stint he had at the NHL level with the Hawks. Your idea makes sense, but most teams don't have a 3rd pair LD that is that good defensively to pair up with Mitchell. And he played a lot at Univ of Denver on his off side when Montgomery was his coach there. Hawks tried it for a short time too. Epic fail!

From my perspective, he’s like a lot of players. Personally, I would have rather had Connor Carrick than him if I were going after a veteran. To me, he’s the classic AHL/NHL tweener. I see no issue in claiming him, but I wouldn’t expect much.
