Description
Assumptions -

Despite winning 8-1 last night, Vancouver is out of the hunt and the future is looking bleak, Petterson has leverage to get away, he can sign his Qualifying offer and walk to UFA next season or file for arbitration and accept the one year award still ending up as a UFA the following year.
Sean Monahan becomes the TDL version that the habs have hoped for in 2022-23.
Kirby Dach progresses and shows he's on the bubble of a being a 1C.

Defence is where they need immediate help if they want to compete. it's only one game but they were the much better team vs. Toronto last night but their defence is atrocious

It's called recognizing opportunity, and until Petterson is signed the opportunity will be there.

yep, but they're still very young. with some more very very young D-men on the way. Some are going to be worth keeping and some are not, I think Hughes (and the rest of the NHL) could use another year of seeing what this young D corps can do before working the phones to improve the D.

Peety has made it clear he wants to win now.Habs are no closer to winning now than the Canucks are.Why would he choose the Habs over the real contenders. No disrespect to the Habs just dont see a fit.IMHO.

That seems short-sighted. What real contenders are going to afford him today? The habs are working to be a real contender in 2 to 3 years, the ground work is there, if they can sell that idea to petey he becomes a big part of the reason they are contenders.

Todays Contenders that could use Petterson? Boston with no Cap Room and no assets to trade, Carolina has the cap but no assets to trade.

Petterson could always use his leverage to get himself to UFA stats as I mentioned above.

The Habs are closer than you think.

Your opinion.Short-sighted hmmm.Do you honestly think the Canucks are gonna let the best player they have had in Years just leave without doing whatever is needed to keep him.Its not happening. They will NOT let him leave. They will offer him what he wants. They have built the team around him and Hughes. Its not realistic. Not sure how many times he has Publicly stated He Loves Vancouver these are real facts.Again just My opinion.

It's not unheard of for the best player to love the city, express a desire to sign long term and for the Team to do everything they can to convince them to stay, only for them to do something else entirely.

Also the first thing I said up above in the description was the assumption that Petterson could use his leverage to walk away. Is it likely? who knows. Is it possible, without a doubt and he wouldn't be the first to do it. - Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Dubois, Adam Fox (twice - Man, poor Calgary)

It's more of a reach to believe there is absolutely no chance of that scenario playing out than it is to consider it could happen.

Also calling someone's ideas and opinions fairy tales and BS does lean to the disrespectful side of a debate.

Habs are NOT going for Petterson, period.

Anyone heard GM Kent Hughes speak recently.

Habs are in rebuild for at least 2 more years, if not 3.

Sure, Petterson is an elite talent, amazing player.
But he'll cost a gigantic contract.
A 24 year-old elite talent should be signed in 3 years. Not right now, when the Habs will (and hopefully) suck, since they have draft picks capital.

As a Habs fan, I almost hope they lose every game 6-5 (but not in OT/SO) so they land at the bottom of the standings.

My point is that you dont have any pieces of real value, you are banking on a bunch of maybes. Dach does not look to be progressing to be a #1C, I dont think Monaghan will get you a 1st, and there is not enough value to get Petey. If you want him, it will HURT and hurt very very bad

LOL that's point of using assumptions, IF A, B and C happen then this is a possibility. If either of A, B or C don't happen, they it's back to the drawing board.

Also Kirby Dach (assumed progressing to 1C) and two first round picks, while taking away the Conor Garland contract without retention??? no value?? get out of here.

But there is no point in assuming if the odds of any of these things happening, let alone all of them happening is slim to none. What if the Canucks are at .750, Petey is on trace for 130 points at the TDL and he has just signed a sweetheart deal for 8y10m. It goes two ways

Hughes would be fired in an instant if he didn't look into an available Petterson. They were in on Dubois this year and that was a way worse fit for Montreal than Petterson would be.

Garland deal is paid market value, Dach is worth a little more than a 1st (as seen as what was paid) then the other 1sts would be late. You are trying to get an MVP calibre, Selke candidate #1 C. There is nothing that he cant do, he shoots, he is a playmaker, he kills penalties, he blocks shots and throws crushing hits. Cody Ceci still hasn’t shaken off the hit. If you want him, quantity is a component, but the value comes from the quality

yes exactly, that was my first assumption stated above. "Vancouver is out of the hunt"

it's armchair GM it's all make believe, these are all scenarios that are possible.
