I'm sure teams would prefer to deal with a team in the other conference, or a team who's not expected to be close to them in the standings, but I don't think they're that picky. There are 31 other teams in the league, so if you help another team while helping yourself, that's 30 teams you've gotten ahead of.

This pick is 3 years out, which means Carolina would have to wait a long time for it to pay off, but there's a better chance it'll turn out to be a high pick because Tampa could be a non-playoff team by then. While this does seem like a good return for a backup goalie, especially when they have another one waiting in the wings, the problem is Carolina has needed all three of their goalies the last two seasons. They're in win-now mode, so I don't know if they want to risk going with two goalies for a pick that's going to take 5-7 years to pay off.
