Canucks decline. The last thing they need is more wingers, especially if it costs multiple 1sts to add said winger. Buchnevich simply doesn’t make any sense for them. Management was also clear that they drafted Willander because they view him as a partner for Hughes for 5+ years, he’s completely off limits in any trade talks.

Definitely not a fan of that Buch trade. Just all wrong pieces coming back.

The Canucks trade is atrocious from a Vancouver perspective. A blue-chip right-handed defence prospect, a potential first-round pick, and a top-six winger for a slightly older, better (by not significant enough) winger?

I may be bias, but based on team need, and positional value, I wouldn't even trade Willander for Buch at this point if I'm Vancouver. They need young cheap defensemen, particularly righties.

What would you like to see in a Buch trade? Vrana for a pick is fine and all but the thought of Buch with retention from looking at this agm is awfully tasty

Well, I'm not interested in trading Buch. But going by his hypothetical scenario, what I would not want is an overpaid essentially UFA Boeser, a deferred 2nd with tenuous conditions and a top 4 RD type. If I want a blue chip prospect, I want someone like Coronato or Mukhmadullin . If I want a roster player, I want a partner for Parayko like Lindgren. It's just the wrong pieces for my taste.

I’m not trying to advocate Vancouver should do this. But I think you vastly underrate what Buchnevich provides versus Boeser. Personally I think it’s pretty fair value for Buch and I say that while being very high on Willander.

I think all of these trades are prettty reasonable. I don’t love the idea of moving Buch. Also, very nitpicky, but I could see Kapanen and or vrana being worth a lot more or a lot less dependent on this season. High talent guys with legit questions at very affordable contracts with no long term commitment. Very hard to gauge up until the point of a deal.

Would this years first from the knights + one of Cormier/Chayka and maybe something else do anything for you guys? A Hague package? Hypothetical fun of course, I'd agree with your sentiment of being better off keeping Buch

If you really wanna know, I tried to make every concession to see if any Canucks fans would consider trading Willander and apparently no one would do it. There's retained money, Blues take back unwanted cap to make it fit, there is a condition on the pick. Is the bizarre part the idea that Buch is worth that much more than Boeser? Because I would consider Buch among the top 25 wingers in the NHL. Obviously no one wants to part with Willander and I can see his upside, but he's a prospect with a good amount of development/risk in his future.

That's fair re: my evaluation of Buch. But in a trade proposal, context does matter and the Canucks issue isn't a wing issue. Their biggest issue is a defence issue. So even if the straight value is accurate (which I disagree with based on the value of puck-moving RHD), based on organizational holes and needs in Van (e.g. defence, cheap/efficient talent, young players making a difference), I think the value Willander holds to the Canucks is greater than the value they would get back in Buchnevich. Value is a relative thing. Buch just doesn't really represent significant value to the Canucks given their context, and I think for most teams the only way they move a young puck-moving RHD for a player like Buch is if they are looking for that last piece to push them over the top.

It's a fair point. Hard to justify the move if you think the Canucks still need a few more pieces to build around. But from the Blues perspective this is moving their best trade piece, they better make sure they get something back that can make an impact down the road. If it isn't from VAN, I think the general value is reasonable enough.

I think you just chose the wrong team haha - I agree 100% with the concept though smile

It's something I wish Vancouver could have figured out many times over the past decade...

No chance Canucks are trading their newest top 10 pick along with the rest for an upgrade on the wing.

Borderline ridiculous ask to be honest.

Would definitely agree with that. That being said, as our own issue was pushed towards the backend. Some of the responsibility also lies on the forwards. It’s why it’s hard for us as fans who watch consistently to entertain the idea of moving buch. He’s an elite two-way player on a very good contract and in an age range the front office desires to have this thing turned around. The benefits of adding a guy like that are large in both ends of the ice and pp/es/pk.

I don’t however think the Canucks are a Buch away from being a contender and thus your rational is why I wouldn’t advocate the Canucks to do something like this. I really like Willanders game and was hoping the Blues would take him in the draft. However, as things shook out I’m very happy with the alternative we got.
