Description
People are really low on Boston but they still have a really strong defensive core. They won't be a 135 point team again but the Atlantic in general is weaker at the top, they don't need to be. With one of the better, if not best, defensive groups in the league and goaltending as well, Boston still have the parts to allow the fewest goals against in the league and the scoring on the wings to bring them to 105-110 point finish...enough to win the Atlantic. Tampa finished with 98 points last season and have only gotten older and worse. I think this is the season they fall out. Florida snuck into the playoffs after finishing 17th in the league before going on a run off a hot goalie and they haven't gotten better this offseason. Starting with injuries to their 2 good defensemen is going to bury the team before they ever get off the ground.

Pens picked up Karlsson but Karlsson isn't likely to repeat his last season. When Karlsson does get injured, and he will, he's being replaced by who? Ruhwedel? The Pens don't have the defensive side of the defense and very unsteady goaltending behind that. It's a letdown waiting to happen.

In the Central people will probably complain about the Jets. They've gotten deeper between the trade deadline last year and this offseason. With more scoring options, a decent defense and Hellebuyck, assuming he stays, I think they make a better showing of it than last year. Hell even if they aren't better, there isn't much competition in the Central past the top 2 teams.

The Pacific is just a ****show. There's the Oilers and Knights. I take the Oilers because the Knights are going to have had a short offseason of partying. After that you could pick problems of any of the teams that would lead to their downfall. LA (goaltending), Seattle (Team wide shooting % regression), Calgary (will Huberdeau and Markstrom's rebound be enough to make up for losing Toffoli and not really replacing him), Vancouver (they are just the Canucks). Any of these teams could make 3rd or 4th in the division and any could fall out of them. Let's just say I flipped a coin.

These are some extremely bold predictions.
I still expect Boston to compete for a playoff spot, and probably make it but I highly doubt they win the division. They have the defense sure but so do teams like NYI, Pittsburgh, and Calgary. Who you ahve as a WC or missing the playoffs.
Taking Buffalo and Ottawa above Tampa and Florida is a very hot take. Tampa went to the finals 3 years in a row, that means they've had at most 3 months off in the summer to heal up each of previous 3 seasons. this year they had 5 months. Florida is not going to be missing those dmen for a very long time. Remember Boston started out last season without McAvoy or Marchand. And neither were expected to return until Christmas.

Arizona is not bad enough to finish last place in the the Central, in fact they are more likely to finish above all 3 of Chicago, St. Louis, and Nashville

I wouldn't say none of those teams are making it. I would take the Sens over the Sabres in a heartbeat but not over Tampa or Florida. Isles are probably a toss up with Pittsburgh for the 4th best team in the Metro right now

Boston allowed 50 less goals last season than the best of those teams and are returning with the same group. None of them are comparables. Hell, trying to say Pittsburgh have any kind of defensive defense is a joke in and of itself. The Islanders would be the closest thing to a comparable of them, the others just don't belong in any way, but even with their top 2 centers gone Bostons offense still easily outshines the Islanders.

Boston was also the best team in the league, and by like 20 points, without those players. Trying to use that as a benchmark for what to expect from other teams is ridiculous. What Boston had left was night and day compared to what Florida has also. Boston still had goaltending while Florida's has been awful other than the playoff run by Bob. Boston still had Lindholm, Grzelcyk, and others. Florida has OEL. There's a dozen reasons using those 2 teams for a comparison isn't a good idea. Other teams won't succeed in the same position just because Boston did, it's still more likely they don't.

Chicago maybe, the other 2 they don't stand a chance. Either way we are talking about teams no one expects to make the playoffs. They aren't important.

I think it's very unlikely the same exact teams make the playoffs in the metro, central, and the pacific.

I think you both vastly underappreciate the loss of Bergeron specifically and overvalue actual goals against. Boston had the best GA/60 in the league last year with 1.74/60 at 5v5. their xGA/60 was 5th in the league with a 2.39/60 and their CA/60 was also 5th with a 53.08. Boston while yes they did have a historic season they were defensively outperforming expectations fairly significantly. It's highly unlikely Ullmark repeats the success he had last year and lack of Bergeron will greatly hurt their defensive play. Right now I would say they are on par with Minnesota.

Florida didn't have Spencer Knight for half the season though and he is a good young goalie. Bob is a good goalie when he is rested, he sucks when he is overworked. If you didn't know this you clearly didn't watch a single game during the playoffs because they talked about him getting rest constantly. I am also not saying that Florida will get 130+ points but it sure isn't hard to beat out a team like Buffalo who are at best on par offensively, have a slight edge defensively while Ekblad and Montour are out (worse after they are back), and no goaltending whatsoever.

Have you not seen Arizona's transformation from last year? They added Cooley, Guenther, Zucker, Kerfoot, Dumba, and Durzi. They lost 36 games of Chychrun, Fischer, Nemeth, Ritchie, and Gostbehere. Hayton will get a full year in a top 6 center role, Maccelli and McBain will continue to improve with more experience, Soderstrom might make the team full time too. They are a young team now with legitimate depth and they play in by far the weakest division. I would say they have a better chance of making the playoffs than Winniepeg.

So rest was key but his best performance by far was the stretch of 20 games when he was getting the least rest? Spencer Knight has also been a goalie but not a good one. His replacements outplayed him last season after he took time off. Hell, Alex Lyon was Florida's best goalie in the regular season last year and had to lose the starting job in the playoffs.

Um yes? It was a major key to their success. The playoffs are also the most intense part of the year so an extra day of rest can go a huge way for some players. Do you not remember the huge outcry from Leafs fans (probably yourself included) when game 3 was got delayed a day so that it wasn't on the same night as the Heat's game? Bob is far from a bad goalie, Florida literally won the Presidents cup the year prior, you can't win that with bad goaltending and Lyon certainly wasn't there.

you know what they say about opinions lol

cant see TBL fall that much, id see them in playoffs before NYI
the west after EDM, LVK, DAL, AVS (head shoulders better), LAK, SEA should be easy ins, the other 2 playoff teams could be anyone (outside ANA, SJS, CHI) and 1st round easy outs
