I don't blame him. The difference in AAV between his next payday at 29 vs 32 would be huge.

I guess it makes sense. If the projection is that the cap will go up THAT much, I can see an 11 million dollar player becoming a 14 million dollar player. I suppose it gives him the chance to opt out too.

A lot of rumors of this and that 5yrs here 8yrs there 10mill and then 10.5mill. This has become a very weird offseason for the Sabres. Wouldn't be surprised to see Power take a similar approach and wait and bridge it next year. 89 have you heard anything on a Date for Dahlin. Has his Agent or Dahlin said anything about a cut off date for Negotiations and then we wait until next year ?

I don't have a reliable source unfortunately. My friend that occasionally gets scraps sent me the peters thing.

The more I think about it, especially with the cap supposedly going up quite a bit, the more it makes sense. A 5 year deal would bring dahlin up to age 30, which would leave the door open for another big contract. An 8 year deal brings him up to 33, which most reasonable people would say is the downside of an nhl career. Plus the Sabres were a clown show for the majority of pegulas decade of ownership, just recently trending towards being a respectable organization again. Dahlin could take 5/55 and walk to ufa as a 30 year old if the Sabres fall back off the wagon. I'm sure somebody who knows more about money could argue the point (present dollars vs future dollars), but it seems that a 5 year deal for over 50 million at 24, still leaves the door wide open for a fat third contract at age 29/30. Compared to an 8 year 88 million that ends at age 32/33, where you likely are looking at fewer years at reduced salary.

Dahlin is certainly a great player.
I also know what the Athletic thinks his salary should be.
I should open a discussion on CF forum, but what makes him worth 50% more than Thompson or Cozens?
Why is he worth more than Makar at $9,000,000, or Miro Heiskanen at $8,450,000.
Buffalo is a very inexpensive city in which to live.
It is easy travel nearly anywhere and in Buffalo a 5 minute delay due to traffic is considered a huge event.
It appears to me that Tage and Dylan are committed to the Sabres and he is not.
This may be harse, but let's only keep the players who want to be in Buffalo.

Do your best to convince me he is wotth $10,500,000 for the next five years while other NHL D-men with equally good resumes earn less and his team mates have taken huge home town favorable contracts.
We will all see how this ends, but this is not a good sign IMHO.

I don't think it's that bad. When Thompson, cozens, and even Samuelsson signed, there was risk involved for both sides. Thompson was coming off an incredible year, but there were reasonable questions about how much he would regress, I mean he tripled his career shooting percentage! Cozens was looking like a nice player, but the offense was underwhelming until last season. Dahlin has the cache of being a first overall pick, and there was talk of him being a generational player. He fell just short of point per game last year, which is very impressive for a defenseman. I think there's holes in his game, Samuelsson does a pretty fair job covering up for that though. Dahlin has an agent, and there's also a players association. I think his market is somewhere between 10 and 11. I would say we were lucky with the Thompson, cozens, and Samuelsson signings- they look like steals. I have no reason to think dahlin doesn't wanna be here, he's a first overall pick that's (finally) starting to show just what all the hype was about, he's probably worth that 10-11 million per contract, and I can't fault him for doing what other stars are doing, namely signing their second contract for fewer than max years, in the hopes of hitting one more major deal after.

Sure, me too. Getting him for longer and likely less money would be good for us, but I'm not gonna throw rocks at the guy if he plays the game that matthews played. It's not like he's trying to leave.

Either am I, like I said earlier it's smart on his part. That's why is 12mill to high. There's gonna be a few that are gonna be up there in a couple years. Maybe it's high for the first 3 years but it might not be after that.

First, thanks for your inputs.
Never want to get into a food fight on this site as in general all your comments are accurate.
In NY City (Rangers, Devils, Islanders) Dahlin should get $10,500,000, maybe a tad more, for 7 years (remember this is an extension if he signs before the end of the season).
Dahlin is exceptional and we know he gets under the opponents skin (see Matthews).
The Sabres are really close to winning the cup, closer than nearly all pundits will admit in writing (maybe off the record they will).
This is Buffalo, great restaurants, great entertainment (Sheas, Irish Classical, Alley Way, 710 etc.), cheap housing, low cost of living (even with NY State taxes https://gavingroup.ca/lifestyle-rankings/ only Carolina tops Buffalo), easy commute etc.
Life style has value and should be reflected in the players salaries.
Being paid 50% more than the teams top two centers could hurt the team chemistry, which is my biggest concern.
You can certainly mention Skinner, but his team mates know he was given more than market value to keep him here, after playing here for five season, he would probably have accepted less.
Let's hope Dahlin will follow Tage and Dylan and sign a more affordable contract as Buffalo will have several other players to keep in the fold in the future.

I agree with a ton of this, but I'm not a 23 year old kid from Sweden. Other cities may be more appealing for any number of reasons- I would think night life and weather would be considerations, those are two areas where we are gonna lag behind the competition (if we were 23 year old kids, i have to imagine). The biggest selling point is possibly/probably that granato has a team full of guys building something special, but if his salary isn't literally forcing other guys to be moved, it's fine. What's important now, is that he's committing to 5 years minimally, he isn't trying to force a trade or anything, just trying to get the most money he can- which his agent and the nhlpa are probably pushing for too.
