I wouldn't give a 3rd and 2nd for a Backlund rental in a flat cap environment.

How's a 3rd and Emil Bemstrom?

Not to mention it just isn’t a trade the flyers would be interested in. A late 1st and a good prospect is the only thing of value and would easily be out bid

Lol no. And *your reasoning makes no sense

I mean, a 34 year old (35 before the season is over) M6 C who has never topped 60 points in a season on an expiring contract worth $5.35M in a league environment where 14 teams are currently over the cap/ needing LTIR, with another 10 having less than $2M in cap (and thus wouldn't be able to afford him outright even with full retention)?

That King Clancy trophy is pretty neat, though.

Why does age matter if he's on an expiring contract?
He's one of the best shutdown centers in the league, he is well worth that cap hit as per league average of that roll
Teams accrue cap space all year long due to reverse pro-rating, Backlunds cap hit by the TDL is ~1.07M. Any contending team would want to pick that up for a cup run and can afford it no problem at all

- Age begets injury risk.

- Cap accrues so long as you are not using LTIR to make cap space, as I recall. Noting 14 teams are again in this range, you aren't going to trade him without engaging in some cap shenanigans/ multi-trades/ taking back contracts.

- Even then, I just think you are overvaluing him. if its a 2nd+, moving on.

It would suck, for sure, but I don't know how Ottawa says no given how it helps the cap situation and keeps the top 4 strong and likely makes it a bit better defensively. Balancing out the top 4 with 2 RHD and 2 LHD doesn't hurt either.

- playing hockey begets injury risk

- Accrued cap is reverse prorating, thats it. Any team regardless of if they are on LTIR should be able to add a player with a prorated cap hit of 1.07M and if retained it's even less. It's as simple as putting someone on waivers

- You think a 2nd+ is too expensive? Well I guess if we are talking about a non-playoff team like the Blue Jackets buying sure since it's simply a wasted asset. But if we are talking about a team like Colorado they would probably do it in a heartbeat

Cool. Any interest in Ondrej Kase, then?

Not sure that is correct...

But hey, go get that '26 2nd and Foudy from COL, my dude. Wishing you guys the best.

I know how accruing cap works, probably a lot better than you do. I don't know if you've noticed or not but Tampa has added relevant players every year despite using LTIR all year long. That is because as the season goes on players cap hits become prorated and they are ~80% prorated by the TDL. If you add a player and move an equal amount out in that trade via sending someone to the minors, get them retained/double retained, you can pretty much add anyone to your roster.

Not sure what the purpose of linking that article is. Was it supposed to be a jab at me? Backlund could probably return a 1st if demand is high for centers, It also doesn't have to be Colorado lol. Plenty of teams are looking to compete every year
