That Detroit offer is laughable. That's a massive overpayment for Nylander. No chance in hell would we do that. Nylander is a good player, top 20 winger in the league maybe. But he's not worth half of that to us.

We don't need to "speed up the rebuild", Yzerman is building for the long term and both Mazur & Sandin-Pellikka should be part of it.

Also Nylander isn't better overall player than Larkin. So that statement is mute.

So essentially 2 1st round picks, a top.prospect, a 2nd and a veteran how is helping the team get more professional will pitching in with goals for a pending free agent who can walk becuas there is no way Yzerman is giving him 10 million.

Nylander is not getting that return for all the reasons listed above and for this big one:

This dude had the longest hold-out in the cap era. His dad is one of the most well-documented helicopter parents in sports. There's no guarantee that if he gets dealt to a team he doesn't like that he'll even play. You can say I'm over-exaggerating things, but I have to imagine this is a serious concern for some GMs.

Yikes I didn't even make it down to that trade. That's one of those trades that will piss off both winnepeg and toronto fans. There's nothing of substance in return for two good players, and yet I guarantee you most toronto fans don't want those two players.

Your getting a Franchise-Altering piece without giving up Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper, or Danielsson. Players like Nylander rarely hit the trade market, so if your keeping all your core-pieces and getting a top-20 winger, why not? Especially if you can get an extension done.

The Wings are not building like Toronto. They don’t have the Matthews and Marner players and don’t have multiple 10 million dollar contracts.

Those pieces are going to help the overall depth of the team. Mazur looks to be at worst a middle 6 (although not a guarantee as he could end up top 6), ASP slots in behind Seider for a 1-2 on the right side that should be fantastic. Another 1st and a second added on, and DP and his playoff experience plus retention, too much.

Because it doesn't make sense? Nylander won't be "franchise altering" when he is 31 and this team is 1) in cap hell with his $10+M contract and 2) when this team is actually competing. Also franchise altering is a stretch, he's a good offensive player on a good offensive team. I'm sure he's ppg player on almost any team I would bet. He's not good defensively and I'm sure Detroit would rather have the younger, cheaper and longer years of those prospects traded away. Nylander doesn't instantly turn is into a contender whereas those young players traded away have a better chance of doing so.

Franchise altering sure is a rose-colored way of looking at a player who has been over a PPG once despite being a notably one-dimensional forward.

This is interesting. The Leafs gets the bank for Nylander, a non retained pending UFA. The Jets on the other hand get peanuts for Scheifele and Demelo, two pending UFAs max retained.
This is a case of serious homerism, all in one ACGM, kind of like the textbook definition.

Again, any smart GM would have SERIOUS concerns about getting an extension done with Nylander. That's the huge issue here. The last two seasons statistically are showing Nylander trending in the right direction. He would likely be the 2nd best player on many teams in this league. But that's all a moot point if a GM isn't confident he will sign an extension. And again, who's to say he he won't sit out if he or Michael doesn't like where he is traded?

Yzerman won't pay Nylander what he wants so 1 year of Nylander is not worth any thing close to that. DeBrincat has more goals in less games than Nylander and DeBrincat got $7.8M.
