I don't think this is something Edmonton would consider. Comparing Bouchard and Liljegren, they would likely prefer the potential of Bouchard. Adding Nylander would be redundant, they have a crazy good offensive group. They need good young versatile two way players like McLeod more than they need another scoring winger. Also the contracts for both of those guys would likely take the majority of their cap space next offseason. McLeod has another year of term which is valuable and Bouchard likely doesn't cost as much as Nylander. Liljegren likely gets a good amount of points playing in Edmonton and likely needs a raise.

I can't see Oilers giving up four controllable years of Bouchard. But how to they afford Bouchard? Like your idea of the trade which is IMO fair to both teams.

For me, at least for this year, Bouchard and Klingberg are redundant in the offensive sense.. Long term, can make some sense.

If such a deal were to take place, it would for me anyway, mean moving Klingberg. And I am not sure how the optics would look on that given Tree just signed him.

For the Oilers, I would say that the Bouchard and Liligren cap hits look similar for a couple years (Bouchard likely to make more beyond a bridge deal). And I have to think Holland would want to keep Nylander long term - which I damn near impossible given their set up.

Agree, the value is there. But just not sure the timing works.

Just a note on free agency. Come July 1, it's always a frenzy for both teams and players to hurry and sign contracts.
I know it's not practical to look in hindsight. But take the Leafs. Would they have been better to not sign Klingberg and hope a player like Dumba would be available later. I'm sure Dumba though he was going to get a better deal....longer term with a contender but he had to settle for 3.9m X 1 with Arizona.
Would the Leafs been with extra cap signing centre Suter for 1.6m X 2 instead of 2.4m X 4 Kampf. With the cap saving they could have filled out the roster better. Of course this is all hindsight, we will never know.

Kampf signing was really bad.

Klingberg I get the logic behind. Not sure what the market was or if it cooled but I think Tre has a similar mindset to why I want Bouchard which is that the Leafs don't have a #1D so they should stop following the Dubas model of building the D by committee and start to find player like Klingberg, Rielly, Bouchard who are not solid #1D but have the potential to play like one.

Klingberg 18 months ago was being offered 7x$7M. By Dallas. Can he return to that?

Bouchard was PPG for 15 games in the playoffs, can he be a 70 point #1D on another team?

Obviously what you are saying is 100% right and it seems like the leafs could have waited and got some cheap guys later.

That being said IF (cause I'm assuming Tre is thinking the way I am) the strategy is changing and they are targeting high potential guys instead of safe value players I'm on board for that.

Correct, Edmonton won't give up 4 years+ of Bouchard for 1 year of Nylander. Probably wouldn't trade Bouchard for Nylander even if their contract/ control was the same, TBH, just due to roster construction.

How do they afford Bouchard? As far as I know they're close on a 2 year x $3.9M bridge. They can afford that if they run a 21 man roster.
