To get Carter, a proven scorer who has won 2 Stanley Cups and is still an elite face-off man and Miller - a proven offensively-minded right shot defender who could play up in the lineup in case of injury. They Oilers are in win now territory and these players can help the team win now.

So why are you trading him for a 3rd pairing defenseman who isn't very good? Desharnais had better stats last year despite vastly harder zone starts. That's a really, really bad trade for Edmonton.

So is the Pittsburgh trade. Foegele scored at nearly twice the rate Carter did last year, 2.09 P/60 v 1.08. The only advantage Carter has is his faceoff ability, but that's not worth $2.75M or the massive downgrade in every other area - and you don't have him at center anyhow.
