Let' pose a different question.
What is the value of a 30 yo GK who over the past four seasons has 0.902 SV% (52nd) and 3.32 GAA (68th)?
Whose best season during that four year period was four ago recording 3.00 GAA 20 W 26 L 5 T 0.904 SV%?
Gibson's value is the increased chance of Buffalo making the playoffs in each of the next four seasons.
The whole reason why Buffalo supporters keep promoting Gibson trades is that all of them, on some level (including the unconscious one), accept that premise.
Gibson is perfect for Anaheim's purposes: both term and cost provide a completely acceptable bridge into what is expected to be our return to relevance in two or three seasons, after which the hope is that Lukas Dostal will be ready to replace him if he's no longer a viable starting goalie. With that in mind, Anaheim is probably not going to part with him unless there is at least one highly valuable asset going back to the Ducks. That could be a first-round draft pick, an A RW prospect like Quinn or Rosen, or some mixture of roster player(s) and goalie replacement (UPL). A second, a random prospect and a fill-in, or even Victor Olofsson, isn't close enough to interesting to motivate us to give a counter-offer.
The package shown here is woefully inadequate. Add a conditional first along the lines suggested by my esteemed friend
@GiggyWithGibby and take out the retention and it is understandable. Another possibility is a 2024 first and Quinn or Rosen. I don't think that any of Buffalo's defense prospects are sufficiently superior to ours that they would feature prominently into any package for JG.
